Cataloging in Luminar

Yes, I know Luminar does not offer cataloging. So is this the bottom line: your images are stored in folders on your Mac, and you use Luminar to edit them one at a time, but you cannot browse through your images in Luminar? If I am wrong, would you please explain how an editor that has no cataloging features works?

I know this is very basic, but I have not found a direct answer to this question online. Thanks for your patience!

I just took a look and did not see a way to view more than one at a time. There is a "bath processing " option which I did not pursue since it's a bit slow even for one image on my computer. For quickly evaluating a lot of raw shots I either use Finder or "FastRawViewer".

When using FRV I reverse the way it works so that my "rejects" are actually my keepers. That tells you my keepers are the minority, of course.

I, for one, don't want cataloging. For me, it just gets in the way. Obviously all those LR users see it differently.

Once I've narrowed down my choices, I just open them one at a time like I would with any program for any file. From Finder, of course, but also possible from Luminar using File->Open or File->Open Recent from the top menu (top of the Mac screen, of course). If you do it from within Luminar it opens a Finder window anyhow. This behavior is just like it would be if it were in Windows.

Since I'm still a hobbyist and take a ton of experimental snaps I just keep a folder on my desktop with a sub folder (2017) with even more sub folders (months of the year). As I take pics I move them to aptly named folders into the months taken. To open them I use Preview as Luminar takes forever. If they need tweaking I open Luminar. At some point I will move the pictures to Photos.

Going to have to look into Fast Raw Viewer ... thanks for the tip a6k

May I ask why don't you import in Photos first and then decide which photos need pp? And you can browse, make folders, put keywords at the very same time...

Honestly, the answer is that I did not think of that. It's not a bad suggestion. Do you happen to know if the folders and keywords will survive the migration to light room, assuming that's what I decide to go with? I'm experimenting with some trial versions of various programs now.

According to their website, "Photo Library and Cataloging" will be coming soon to Luminar. Here is a link to webpage comparing Luminar to other software.

Sorry, I don't use LR. But Luminar is an extension in Photos so nothing goes lost. As far I understood Luminar is not very different from LR...
