Woodpeckers drill into trees to catch insects that are attracted to the sap oozing from the wounds.

I like the expression on his face.

Nice Red-bellied Woodpecker. In Michigan we get more of these than true Red-headed Woodpeckers.

Thanks.

In all my years I have only seen the red-headed a couple of times. Took several photos but that was when I was inexperienced shooting birds. Missed the focus on this one, but it shows the bird quite well.

We have a pair this spring. First time I've seen one in 73 years in Michigan.

Excellent image Joe, and you must have very good eyesight as I had to double clicked the red-headed before I could clearly see the focus problem!

The Eyes have it.

Amazing shot. Technically perfect. Incredible sharpness with an effective 750mm at 1/200 of a second.

Was that taken with a Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 500mm on a D500? (file info just says 500mm)
