Thank you so much for the reply Wingpilot. Correction re SD card is understood. How do I determine the speed of the card when I purchase? I ride a Wing myself.

On the face of the card it will tell you how many GB the card it. Just above that (I'm looking at a Sandisk Extreme PLUS, 16GB card, it will indicate the MB/s. In this case, 80 MB/s. That makes it a fairly fast card.

All good information so far. One important thing is You can buy just about any card out there and it will work with that camera. The picture size is small and the camera doesn't have a fast multi-shot burst rate so any old card will do. It will tell you how many pictures you can take with the card when you put the card in and turn the camera on.
You don't have to pay the money for the newest fastest supercard out there..................

Buy a 16gb card. It will hold thousands of pictures.

This is my first & only DSLR (at 85 yrs) I love it & don't plan a upgrade for sometime. My problem is I don't understand "chip size". Would someone please explain this in very simple terms. What is the normal size chips I should use and whayt is the MAX size chip I can/should use. Picture taking is just for my personal pleasure.

Of course it is. Get a good quality 32gig SDHC card. SanDisk Extreme seems to be a gold standard. Format it in your camera, and don't delete images with your computer - just in the camera. I just checked. The 80 will accept SDHC cards (4-32 gigs) but not SDXC (64 gigs and up).

Glad to see that you are getting out there and using your DSLR. The kind of "chip" as you call it is called an SD or SDHC memory card. This is what your camera takes. The SD / SDHC stands for (Secure Digital or Secure Digital High Capacity)This camera is 11 years old and takes 10 megapixels images. This is small by today's standards, so you can use smaller SD cards with this camera. Mostly people use 32 GB (GB = GigaByte) cards but you could use 8GB or 16GB cards fine. I'd suggest you keep clear of off brand cards, and stick with the better known brands such as Lexar, Kingston or SanDisk. I like those 3 but you can use any that you like. Prices are very low on the smaller memory cards so going with a brand name card is cheap.

The best practice to use when taking pictures is to format the memory card using the camera. Formatting is preparing the card to accept pictures by the camera for the camera. After you take pictures, remove the card, put it in your computers card reader, transfer the images to your computer. Do whatever you like with those pictures that are on your computer but be careful not to delete them or put them in a folder that you can't remember. Then put the memory card back into your camera and format it again. This keeps the cards filing system indexed and ready for new pictures.
Glad to see that you are getting out there and usi... (show quote)

Best advice all day.

Hi BiiMac - You have a lot of input here on this subject from those that may or may not have any experience with a Nikon D80. My previous post in this thread gives you what is stated in the Nikon D80 owners manual. I still have and use a Nikon D50 released in April 2005 and your D80 was released in August 2006. When I tried any memory card above the Nikon approved limit (in the case of my D50 it was 2 GB) the camera would not recogize the memory card. Again, my advice is to stick with the approved memory cards that Nikon has recommended in the owners manual as in my first post. Good luck and happy shooting. chase
