While fiddling farting about in the woods arround Natural Bridge State Park, Kentucky, I ran across this situation.
The American Toad will, when being eaten by a snake, puff itself up by filling the lungs with air, in an attempt to dissuade the snake by being too large to swallow. You can plainly see the effect is sufficient, and often successful. Here, the snake was more determined than the toad, and in the course of the struggle it seems as the toad's skin was punctured, and the lung has come out of the toad.
While it was a bad day for the toad, and a meal hard won for the snake, it did allow me an unique peek into a normal drama of nature.
Wow that's crazy looking. Did you watch it finish swallowing it?
That's something you don't see everyday. Great capture of Nature at work. ;-)
That would give me indigestion...
I must have been in the same woods this weekend
That is amazing imaging well done.

Fantastic shots. The snakes longer rear teeth have punctured the 'balloon', deflating the lungs. A little hard on the dinner guest, but a great story of the real world.

Oh, dear! I like toads and snakes, but hate it when this happens. The toad looks clueless. Maybe that says something.
Well done. Thanks for sharing (I think).
Good shots, UXOEOD! Poor toad!
