What have I done to my CANON G16?

At some point in the last few days I've upset something in my G16. The attached image shows a couple of kids playing 'kerby'. Look closely and you'll see that the image shows the kids 'split' almost like a double exposure. I'd prefer to avoid a return to defaults if anyone has a clue as to what I might have done.

There are several "iffy" occurrences in this image, see ringed spots. I could (or probably am) be wrong, but when passing the image through PSE, were you using a masking technique of any sort?

No, not looking to tidy up the image at all. I'm pretty sure I've upset or changed something in the cameras menu's / settings that's caused this. I'll get out later on and try a few things but I'm flying in the dark!
It looks like its recorded 2 images. This image, shot the day before, shows something similar. It's not shake because the streetlights are sharp (ish) but if you look at the cars there are two distinct images which I'm assuming are the distance travelled during the exposure, but its not movement blur.

Thanks for looking.

OK, if it wasn't an accident of PSE, could it be that you have either Bracketing or in camera HDR switched on? (I don't know if these facilities are even on your camera.)

Perhaps restoring the camera to factory defaults would be helpful.

I checked this morning and found HDR was on, in the effect filters mode. I usually keep this camera on auto, but find it's all to easy to move the selector dial inadvertently. HDR is multiple exposure on this camera rather than an electronic edit and I think this is the result of in camera processing trying to join mismatched images. Suns breaking through so I'm off to the motorway to hopefully prove.

It appears to only affect moving objects.

John,

It looks similar to setting a camera to perform in camera HDR, where the camera captures 2 or more images and processes them for HDR exposure range. What you are seeing is subject movement between the two exposures (milliseconds apart).
Consult your user manual to set the camera for HDR exposure and processing, then reverse the settings to get back to normal.

Problem solved. I feel a bit of a numpty, not realising this, but when the camera kept flashing up busy after I'd taken a shot I should have. As I said above, the selection dial had moved (inadvertently) from AUTO to CREATIVE FILTERS. This allowed HDR, but I was shooting as if on AUTO.

Pleased with the Forum Community for looking and thinking and confirming what I eventually suspected to be the issue.

Thanks all.

No you're not a numpty, unless you make the same mistake over and over again, especially on sequential days. We have politicians and national leaders to do that for us!
