Yes you can and I've done that before. I work in the news industry. The press pass is only as good as the people are willing to accept it. Every situation seems to be a little bit different..... It's their choice. That's when you figure ways to sneak in.

Yep. Public events are much simpler than private events such as concerts, conferences and so on. As are 'events within events'. Checking out what passes are required and what they give access to is a very good idea. There are always ways to circumvent security and talk your way in, but nothing is guaranteed and you may also get bounced.

A local community newspaper has asked me to photograph certain public events on an upcoming trip abroad which they will run a story on back home. They will furnish me with a letter confirming the assignment. But they advised that I should get a press pass. Is there some legitimate organization I can join to get such a pass?

In NYC the NYPD issues press credentials. Some are event-specific, like the St Patrick's Day parade, and some cover the reporter for a year. You'd need the letter confirming the assignment and other supporting documentation and you'll be subject to a security inspection, The "press passes" sold in the back of cheap magazines are crap. Don't bother.

Pretty much anything except certain worship services.

Can you add some specific qualification to that? It doesn't seem to make much real sense. What is special about worship in comparison to any other private event?

I was making a joke. I don't think it would have got em into a satanist service, or the Mormon temple in Salt lake, not that there's any comparison. I also doubt that it would have got me into a Beatles concert, but it might have if there had been one. In my case it was generally used to get photos of car wrecks and structure fires, and the occasional press conference.

Major name musical groups are going overboard now about trying to control any use of any image that even slightly resembles them. In these times, Meatloaf would sue Bob's Big Boy for the statue of the kid in front of the stores.

OK as a joke, I'm with you. Also, for Mormon Temples, they're a world unto themselves although I like the giant hot tub on the backs of the oxen! Reminds me of various establishments in Germany.

Without approval from the event's sponsors access will be limited.

bjw,
The IFPA is a good place to start if the going to be a constant line of work. Your local media sounds like a small shop that probably doesn't issue its own staff any kind of press credentials. in smaller communities everyones knows everyone and police knows the press. In larger areas, a press card will carry weight. I was a member of NPPA for a period of time. The membership card got me into many events that were otherwise off limits.

Hope this helps.
