My d500 will under expose if I use matrix metering on a dark subject and bright background. I need to remember which exposure method works best. I use a spot or narrow meter most of the time. The camera needs a skilled operator. When my head is working right it is a great camera. I shoot manual more than 50% of the time. The rest of the time I shoot aperture or shutter priority. The right mix gives me good results.

Interesting. Thank you, Home Brewer.

Getting a little off track here, if you get a D500 be sure to program the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons. I assigned group-area AF to the Fn1 button and My Menu to the Fn2 button. I then loaded My Menu with frequently used items. Also, the video record button which is to the left and behind the shutter button can be reprogrammed to mode. I don't shoot video so I reprogrammed mine. By holding down the button and rotating the command wheel (I forgot now if it's the front or rear wheel) you can switch between Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority. and Manual mode.

It will be nice to have two function buttons. My D300S has one, or two if you count the reprogrammable depth of field button.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a D500. I've heard it has a tendency to underexpose. I'll find out eventually for myself, but in the meantime I'm curious about the experiences of D500 owners here. Are you having to compensate for the camera's metering?

Thanks!

I just spent 10 days in 5 different cities in China. Not wanting to carry my regular gear of full frame Nikon bodies due to weight. I asked Nikon to send me a D500, battery pack and 18mm-300mm lens to demo. I took the D500 to China and found it to be an excellent choice. It did everything I wanted and then some. I even took images hand held on a boat at ISO 5000 with very little noise. The adjustable LED screen was great and touch screen made it very fast to use. I never had a problem with underexposure but if I did I would just use exposure compensation to adjust.

If I didn't shoot full frame, I would seriously think about getting a D500 after using it for 10 days in a real world situation. Then I still might. It's a hell of a camera.

I added a few images from my trip shot with the D500.
