And anyone going south to and through Big Sur, be aware that the Highway 1 is closed in that area. Very sad...

Approaching from the South, I suggest you enter the park through the Wawona entrance just north of Bass Lake. Drive into the park, see the Sequia Grove and then turn right onto the Glacier Point road. At the end you will have a stunning almost edge view of Half Dome. Ina addition you will have a hiking trail access to the entire ridge over the southern rim of the valley. A true Bird's eye view. Photo ops galore. Hike this area as much as time allows. Then procede to Tunnel View and in teh rest are si available, check for Ansel's tripod holes for the iconic valley view. Enter the valley and PARK YOUR CAR at the Yosemite Village somewhere. Tahe the shuttle around the valley, getting OFF frequently for photography. You will be able to shoot back at teh south wall including the most beautiful chapel and Bridalveil Falls. Get off at the Nevada Falls Terminus and hike a little to see Vernal Falls.
Be sure to, also get some shots of the Merced River with EPIC reflections. and go to the West side of El Captain to be sure you see Horsetail falls. This stream rarely has enough water to show much spill over. BUT THIS YEAR is over the top. El Capitain Meadow is a good spot for 360 degree views of: Yosemite Falls, El Cap, Taft Point ??? Three Brothers??/, and MUCH more. You will be in the middle ground of the Tunnel View photo you took on teh way in.

Have a nice trip, too bad you have such a short time.

I'll be visiting Yosemite for a day and a half in the middle of May, followed by a full day at Sequoia, and would like to hear from those of you who've been there where to go, and in what sequence, for the best shots. My kit will include my D7200 (and D300S backup), along with 35, 18-200 and 70-300 lenses. I'm leaving my 200-500mm (probably a mistake) at home because I'm flying to the west coast and back and will have my camera bag and another carry-on. I'll be driving a rental car for the entire trip, which will include traveling from Sequoia to Oceanside/San Diego then on to Phoenix. Any other tips on interesting/scenic sights along the way, and links to pertinent websites, would be most appreciated.

As others have said, the roads may be closed or challenging. For the Yosemite segment you may want to consider renting an all wheel drive vehicle. You can swap it out later...

Are the main roads in Yosemite dirt, gravel or paved?

All the main roads are paved, but whether they are open or navigable is a different thing. If you only have a two wheel drive vehicle you may be required to have chains which is a whole different pain in the rear end.

That would be Glacier Point and Half Dome. It is worth checking with the park service, since this has been a harsh winter although we welcome the snowpack: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/glacierpoint.htm

Yes, I will be checking with the park service on road conditions before going to the park.
