G2 $1099 on sale at Buy Dig Ebay. It is USA model. The price might help you with your decision. They are authorized Tamron sellers.

I had the first version of the Tamron and trade it in for the G2. I am very happy with the lens. It is very sharp and has many great features. I shoot with a D750 and a D7200 and it's very sharp on both cameras. I could have bought the Nikon 200-500 for the same price, but read that a lot of the copies had focus issues and were being sent back to Nikon for repair. This is an image taken with the D750 and the G2 at 600mm f9 125th ISO 1000 hand held- slightly cropped. I adjust the lens with the TAP system. (It takes time to get it right, but well worth it) When I change from the D7200 to the D750, I make and in camera Auto Fine Tune adjustment of only +1 on the D750 for the change in camera body from the D7200- very little difference. I originally set up the lens to the D7200 with the TAP software.

I've found several discussions on this but none that actually address my question.

I currently have the Tamron 150-600 G1. I've used it a fair amount and it does well but the pictures always seem a little soft. I've read that the new G2 version, as well as the Nikkor 200-500, is much better. I'm trying to decide if it is worth selling my G1 and buying either the G2 or Nikkor 200-500 and if so which. I know the following about each:

Tamron 150-600 G2:
Has much faster focus than the G1 and the Nikkor
Image Quality is excellent but slightly less than the Nikkor
Larger range than the Nikkor (50 on the bottom end and 100 on the top end)

Nikkor 200-500:
Image Quality is the best of the 3 lenses
Focus is faster than the Tamron G1 but slower than G2
Retains it's value better than the Tamron

My concern with the Nikkor is the shorter range and the slower focus. I'm wondering if that could cause me to miss some shots that the Tamron G2 might bring home. I have both a D750 and a D7200 I can use it with and of course I want the best IQ I can get.

Does anyone know how different the IQ is between the Nikkor 200-500 and the Tamron 150-600 G2? Is there a significant difference or are they close enough to not really be able to differentiate?

Is it worth the cost to sell the G1 and buy either the Tamron G2 or the Nikkor? Are the benefits great enough to be worth the cost?

Thanks,
Curtis

Only you will know when you will be satisfied. There will always be a "something better" to lust over.

The 200-500 is a no brainer for Nikon shooters. - for Canon and Sony shooters, a completely different story.

You don't mention which camera you are using. The camera body can make a huge difference in focus speed.

Myself, I use the Tamron 150-600 I on either a Canon (I know you are using Nikon but) 7D or 70D and the focus is more than fast enough for flying birds. The sharpness is also quite fine and any improvement brought about by any other lens, even a prime let alone the new Tamron or Nikon 200-500, would be small and not worth the purchase price.

Just some food for thought.

Curtis,

Gene51 sent you a link to a review on the Nikon 200-500 and his thoughts on it compared to the Tamron G2. Here is another link to the same website with their review of the Tamron 150-600 G2, which echo Gene51's comments in comparing the G2 to the Nikon.

Oh sorry I meant to but must have forgotten. I have 2 bodies, Nikon D750 (full frame) and D7200 (crop frame).

Do you have a link? I searched google for it and went to that site but it only has it for $1399.

Google "Buy Dig eBay" instead of just "Buy Dig" if that's what you Googled. It will take you to the Buy Dig eBay website. Once you have the Tamron lens page, you will see 2 different listings for the G2 lens. One price is $1399.00 and the other is 1699.00 crossed out and it says "see price in cart". When you do that, you have to login to eBay if you have an account in order to see the price they are selling it for. I haven't bought or sold anything on eBay in years, so I was not able to login and check the price. Lots of times when they tell you to check the price in the cart it is because the price they are selling it for is quite a bit cheaper. It may not be, but there are 2 listings for the G2 lens on the Buy Dig eBay website and it may be cheaper.

I did search for "Buy Dig eBay" and the first one that came up with the link I provided. Apparently Google is returning different results for me. If I remove the quotes I do find their ebay site. I click on the See Price on Checkout link it takes me to a page that lists the lens at $1399 and asks if I want to buy one. I cannot seem to find the one listed for $1099.

For $1099.00 I would jump on that price for the G2. I couldn't find any listed at $1099.00 either.

I didn't want to believe such assertions, frequently coming from Nikon "fan boys". But after using the 200-500, I am forced to agree with you. Exceptional lens with very effective optical stabilization.
