But, the D7xxx series will meter with older MF lenses the D5XXX will not. Nor will the D5XXX series AF with older, less expensive "D" series lenses. Actually, what to go with depends on the intended use. I have an articulated screen on my mirrorless camera & had one on my old Coolpix 8700. Very rarely used them. I have a plethora of older MF & AF (not AFS) lenses and the D7XXX series is much more useful with them (as is my D610). I only have a few lenses with built in motors & even fewer with VR. Found that for what I normally shoot, I didn't need those features. BTW, Those buttons save time as opposed to having to scroll thru menus to access features. As for costs, used & refurb units help immensely.

IMHO this is bad advice.

The control mechanisim on the D7xxx sucks. It relies on unlighted randomly placed buttons and a little green screen I can't read without reading glasses. The info screen on the LCD isn't active where it needs to be as on the D5xxx.

D7xxxs weigh and cost twice as much and lack the extremely usefull fully articulated LCD.

Unless you already own old lenses the in body focus motor is just something else break. No modern lenses need it.

May I respectfully suggest that anyone looking for a D5XXX consider the D7XXX series; because the D5XXX series requires a motor in the lens, the D7XXX will make available a wider range of lenses. Also, unless you are in need of wide angle, do not dismiss FX lenses, if only to equip yourself for an eventual change to full frame.

Excellent advise; exactly what I was going to say. The 50 f1.8 AF is an excellent lens and is available for cheap (will only work on a D7000 series camera since it requires the motor in the lens). It is also excellent reversed for extreme close ups. On a DX camera the 50mm will act like a 75mm lens and is slightly short for portrait work, so you may also want to consider the 85mm F1.8 AF, which is also an excellent lens. These are use lenses I'm recommending; you save money, get better housings and excellent glass.

I am looking at a refurbished d5500 and was wondering what would be a good lens for portrait and photos of son playing piano on a stage with not great lighting. Maybe used/refurbished in $500 range. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks for all your help. I'm leaning towards the d5500 with the 50mm 1.8G. Will post some photos after purchase.😁
