how much space is left on the existing drive, as some already asked are you shooting raw or jpg. you can get external hard drives which I recommend you do anyhow(for your laptop as photos will fill the laptop at some point. I have numerous external drives) but afters years of choosing to lug around so much equipment I just bring a couple extra 32mb cards for the camera and do the work of putting everything you took on the externals at home. Good luck and have a wonderful time.

As I have mentioned in a previous post. I am heading out West for a wedding in Colorado and then heading to the West coast for extensive traveling and photo ops. We will be gone for at least one month and will be taking lots and lots of pictures. ( MY wife also shoots) I always shoot in RAW and the wife in Jpeg. The question is I have purchased a laptop with a 1TB hard drive and I am afraid of running out of space. (Don't want to keep files on SD cards). Do you think 1TB (actually about 875 Gigs after needed programs are loaded) is going to be enough if I shoot in RAW and the wife in Jpeg or should I convert to Jpeg also, seeing as they will take up much less space. I am aware of the negatives of not shooting in Raw when it comes to post processing. I have seen people using a small external hard drive and would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have on them. Don't want to lug around one of my big external hard drives. Thanks in advance.
As I have mentioned in a previous post. I am headi... (show quote)

Micro center had a 1TB external drive that fits in your pocket for $59.00 that makes 2tb that should be way more than enough space

I have 12,217 photos in a file It takes 275 MB on my HD. I use a Nikon d810 with 36 MP so if your camera shoots that size or smaller I guesstamate your drive will hold 36,000 files plus or minus a few thousand.... Id Still want that extra storage as a backup , just in case.....

I use 128 gb and 256 gb USB flash memory sticks. If I find myself running out of room, I just find a best buy or other computer store and buy some more. I leave the laptop home and use a simple device that has an SD card reader in it - the Ravpower WD03 - and writes to any USB connected device. File transfer is managed by cellphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.

It looks like the 128/256 GByte flash memory sticks can be around $30/$60 each. At that price the small Terabyte hard drives are significantly cheaper per GByte.

But the Ravpower looks like it's more compact for on-the-road storage. Too bad it appears to use only SD cards. My cameras use XQD or CF cards. So I will have to continue to carry my laptop and card reader with me.

Great analogy, I say take some photos look at how many megabytes each photo takes and use this gentleman's math my photos on my D 5300 which is 24.3 megapixel's come out to about 8 MB on average, so we can all talk about what Ken will or won't be done but I think if you consider megapixels all that stuff just take photos divided in the math like the man says and you'll figure it out, that and how many photos you usually take a day because I have taken Close to 2000 in a day.
