Sending a package to you at a hotel you will stay at via FedEx only assures arrival. I did this a few years ago; the package arrived but the hotel mislaid it and it took until the next day after I arrived to locate it - when the person who placed it in a secure' area came back on duty. I now carry all photo gear with me into the cabin, and do not anticipate that if I let them inspect it when I start that there will be any problems in the USA. However, baggage rules and inspections at foreign airports, including Heathrow( London) vary and change nearly at will. I may have to carry a 'hard' camera/lens case if the foreign on-board baggage inspectors do not permit it in the cabin. I had a friend who loaded baggage at SFO who told me that they often dropped or threw bags.

See if your pelican case can put 2 tsa locks per hole (4 locks) all with different combinations. Tsa can unlock them all and as log as they put them all back on it will quadruple the time it takes for someone to unlock them. Of course this may also indicate that something of value is n place so it may become permanently misplaced. I am working on a setup that would allow a cable to be looped through the holes in the case such that multiple locks are more feasible. The issue I am running across is finding a cable where the loop Ferrell is small enough to fit through the hole in the case

so the suitcase frame is around 10 lbs. And now the photo case & camera will add another 10 lbs. Not much of that 50 lb limit will be left. Maybe flying into Canada or Mexico & driving across is easier. Drive Toronto - Buffalo & then fly from there, etc.

Not sure about the image quality when you blow it up probably not good enough for a print that size. Best bet might be shooting film, scanning and printing from that...

Pelican makes special TSA cable locks for their cases.

would tsa really be capable of telling the difference? and couldn't a tiny bomb be hidden in a nikon f2 as easily as in a nikon df2?

Yes the right amount of C4 placed properly might just do that. The Marines taught me well. They even taught me electronics.

If it is that much trouble why travel outside USA? We have so much more here that in a persons lifetime you cannot see it all.
We really need a new B&W digital instructions on shooting Yosemite. Because digital B&W is much different than film B&W. Ansel Adams taught us a lot on B&W film but the digital with a mediocre gray scale of 126 greys needs some new experiments for good B&W data for shooting a black on black shot and a white on white shot.

In light of Stockholm, I suspect it will only be a matter of time when more flights to the US will prohibit more than a cell phone in the cabin of the airplane, hence requiring DSLRs to be tossed below in with luggage. And I thank other UHH members for telling me about toss-safe cases, but many International flights require two, three, or four transfers, and there exist the problem. To which I have a new challenge for my fellow UHH members.

Suppose I cannot take my DSLR to and return from the Baltic region. I plan to travel there only once, and that includes the Hermitage Museum. Does there exist an ultra thin camera that could capture an image good enough to become a 60x48" wrapped canvas? I have such an image on the wall, image from Florence, Italy. I want to do it again from St. Petersburg. My Canon 5DII would do that well, again. BUT, we don't know what Summer 2017 will present to air travel.

So, suppose a DSLR cannot be used, do you all have an ultra-thin (and small) camera that you have used, that would take an amazing RAW image, yet be about the size of an iPhone?

In light of recent events I really wouldn't fly United if I were you. It is time for a boycott.

At least hit them on twitter. I've been mileage plus since its inception. Hate to give up my miles, but this is way over acceptable.

I agree. Two years ago I was Premier Platinum, over 75,000 airmiles in a single year on United. Currently not traveling much so back to basic status and have used most of my airmiles.

First Smisek who came from Continental did a terrible job with merger and reduced frequent flyer benefits. Now this, and the CEO Munoz seems to be clueless about communication and is making a PR disaster worse.

I'll definitely be considering alternative carriers in the future.

I recently had a problem with United on a flight back from Europe and believe me the left-hand does not know what the right hand is doing I also have recently learned from a former United pilot that they have some of the worst planes in the air from an age standpoint, I will from now on go out of my way to not fly United or American both terrible carriers.

After reading the NOTAM, and assuming this restriction goes viral and every airline is forced to comply, I suggest getting a Pelican case, lock with a TSA approved roller lock, and insuring the kit for loss or damage. I have carried full suitcase loads of camera gear to Africa and had no trouble.
