I have taken the plunge and am ready to try infared photography. I had a Sony ILC worked on for this purpose. Question is where do I start exposure wise? Iso? Any thoughts?

Another route to I.R. is to use a camera equipped to shoot I.R. with a flip of a switch.
The Sony DSC-F828 can still be found on eBay.
Here are some examples of its product.

edit...should have added you'll have to use an infrared R72 filter that blocks all visible light but allows passage of the infrared wavelengths.

Best regards,
Dave

I've grown to like my Nikon P7000 cool-pix camera. It shoots raw and HD video, nice zoom range, compact, pretty good close-up capability. It's been reliable but it's getting old. I will get a newer one but since the Infrared conversion process costs about $250, now I'm asking myself why not do it to the newer model instead. So I am procrastinating.

...yeah, cost is an issue, but considering the money we put out on gear, it's minimal. Do you have any oldie-but-goodie DSLR bodies? My pattern has been to do the conversion once I have the upgraded DSLR in hand, with prior knowledge provided by the first *risk*...maybe you'd consider doing the P7000 after you get the new one? I don't have a point and shoot and depend on my phone for instant pix...it works OK and with Google Photo and the Prime thing both backing up as I go, it's really easy to just download and work on what I want, same thing could go with a P&S IR conversion, I suppose?!

Brings to mind a quick question, on a converted camera, does one still have to do a color channel swap between the red & blue channels in post ? It's been a long time since I dabbled in IR.

You don't HAVE to do it. It's an artistic decision. If you want blue skies, you do it. But I've seen people doing faux color IR who prefer to keep the sky red.

Life Pixel which does IR conversions offers many, many options and variations. I'm going to pick the version that gives the strongest color variations because that would yield the most potential for adjusting the tonal values in Black and White.

...I took a chance and used a gentleman named Isaac Szabo to do my last conversion, he did my D300 in 580nm "Super Color"...he's Googleable and very reasonable...

I have had several cameras converted to IR, You will love it. It's like Black & white on steroids Not all that impressive in the winter though. I am not all that fond of the color IRs. I leave my setting P program (P) for most all my work. Larry

Great images.

I think the point of rendering IR captures in various colors is that you can than use the sliders in Photoshop's B&W adjustment layer to have more impact and more control on the overall tonality in the final monochrome product.
