Travelling with a camera

My hardside camera case will fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment. I would not consider checking my camera gear. I think enough people need to complain about any requirement to check gear - I would be happy to allow them to hand-search my gear before checking it IF they would then allow me to put a big lock on the case!

Never check in camera equipment in your luggage. If you're traveling to another country, even carry-on could be a problem. For example, I know of a case when the idiot at the US Customs required a photographer to "open up" a 100-400mm Canon tele-zoom before being allowed to proceed to the baggage claim!

No problems.

Don't even check any luggage unless you absolutely have to, and NEVER check anything of value. I have millions of miles logged on two different US airlines, and I can tell you that there are only two kinds of luggage: carry on...and lost.

Some good suggestions in the replies. As for me, when I have exhausted every possibility of traveling by some other way than airline (I'm a retired airline pilot, by the way), my tripod or monopod goes into a checked bag. My SX50 gets the call for carry-on while my A77 stays at home.

Always carry your gear. Period. The monopod will not make it through TSA, so check it into your luggage.

Actually, according to the TSA website, you CAN bring both tripods and monopods in your carry-on luggage:

http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?search=monopod
http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?search=tripod

I have brought my tripod several times with no problem at all. Of course, the actual TSA agents can decide otherwise, so "your mileage may vary" but if you keep those links on your phone, you can show them the rules.

Hope this helps.

I strap my tripod to the side of my roller camera bag, and have not had a problem. The camera bag is one of my carry-ons. If I have a monopod, I put it in my checked luggage, and have not had a problem. I have not tried to bring the monopod with me as a carry-on, so I can't help you with that question.

I always carry (on) my backpack, stuffed with gear, on flights.

Im getting ready to take a flight with my new DSLR camera and a couple lenses. Im trying to decide whether I should carry on my camera bag, or put them into my luggage.
Id appreciate anyones thoughts and/or experiences.

Im also thinking about taking a monopod (collapsed, but still about 18" long). Is this something I can have in my carry-on luggage, or does it need to be checked?

I Never check any of my camera equipment. Pack up what you want to take in an appropriate camera bag / backpack and slide it under the seat in front of you...I don't ever use overhead space either. Keep it with you at all times.

Last summer I flew from the U. S. A. to Canada. I carried in a messenger bag my Nikon 810 camera, and 2 lenses. My tripod and the other stuff I put in my suitcase. I had no trouble getting through security, and customs and was able to put my messenger bag under the seat on the plane. It was an easy process.

I have taken many flights with my camera gear in my carry on F Stop camera bag and I check my tripod in my luggage. I have never taken a commuter flight which I understand has much more conservative restrictions on carry on.

These are really good suggestions. I vacation internationally two or three times a year and wear a dorky fishermans/photo type vest. Going thru TSA my phone, wallet, keys and anything else I have to shed go in the pockets and pass thru the scanners (I never have items like that loose). As well all batteries (lithium batteries can not be in checked luggage), extra cd cards (do take extras) etc. are in the pockets. All camera gear goes in a day pack with flexible light wt neoprene covers (I never carry bulky cases that come with photo items) snugly packed. I put all chargers, cables, etc in a gallon ziplock. That and monopod (I usually take combo walking pole/monopod) in checked luggage. Fingers crossed as so far has worked for me. Also I have never had the weight checked on my day pack, but that might be a consideration with small planes. The items I mentioned can all be bought at Amazon. Also, be very sure straps on the day pack are secure and handle it like a baby.

wouldn't that set off red flags? ( as far as the vest.)

Does anyone NOT see how a photo vest might cause some security concerns???
