I found that CTRL + results in sub-scripted text - CTRL + again and normal text resumes.

I also suspect a English British setting is the problem.

Check "Control Panel" and look for "Region and Language". There are settings here that will affect keystrokes from the keyboard.
Be sure they are set to the correct setting for where you are located.

I need a little help. When I press SHIFT + 2 I get " instead of @ and when I press SHIFT + 3 I get £ instead of the HASH symbol and when I press SHIFT + " I get @ instead of " . All others seem OK. Seems like these couple of keys have reversed. I'm not a computer guy, however I suspect this to be a very simple fix. Can someone please help me before I start the chainsaw in frustration..... I would be eternally grateful.

You can choose several "setups" for your keyboard. Google is your friend.

Thanks all for your advice, very much appreciated. It was not a keyboard problem. For some reason my computer's brain migrated to British English. Fixed. (without resorting to the chainsaw)!!

Thankyou Jerry. Nothing worked until all other languages where removed. Removal of others is the secret. Again - thanks.

Na-a, don't use a chain saw. That's too complicated. Just use a sledge hammer.
I know several things about computers, but this one is out of my league. Apologies.

I think a 12GA shotgun does wonders also

I have a grandson who managed to acquire the combination to his father's gun safe. Yes, yes, he removed the 12GA and, while fooling around with it, blew away one side of the computer monitor. But we're not done yet; the shot also put a hole in the wall. AND, despite warnings of severe consequences, he did it again. But the second time he just put a hole in the wall. Fortunately his father exercised admirable self control and didn't kill the kid. He had someone change the combination to the safe.
