My Publisher out of business

I am in the same boat as you. I have used MyPublisher.com for many years and have had them print many photo books for me. I have tried other companies including Shutterfly and Blurb but none compare to MyPublisher.com on the quality of paper (I always upgrade to their best paper) and their Lay-Flat pages. I dread having to find another company to print my books. If you find one comparable, please let us know.

I loved My Publisher for its ability to let you download its software on your computer, make the book and upload to MP site, compared to other similarly priced companies where you have to upload your pictures to their site and then make books on their site.
Lightroom lets you make books, and send it to Blurb. Similar concept. MP had deals almost all year. At some point, Shutterfly bought MP. If you go to Shutterfly site, MP will be listed on their site as their product as well. It is to be seen if Shutterfly will continue MP's idea of letting you download standalone software as an option when MP officially goes down.

All suggests are very good. I have used Snapfish as well. Equally good.

I travel a lot and do most of my photography while traveling. Afterwards I enjoy making a photo book using My Publisher. I have nearly a dozen of their 15x11.5 inch books on my shelf. They all have lay-flat pages and are all 100 pages. Does anybody know another company that makes a comparable product? I love the size of these books as the aspect ratio is nearly the same as what comes out of the camera allowing me to compose in-camera as I otherwise would. The lay-flat feature is also important for a two page spread. Today My Publisher sent an email that they will be closing down in early May and now I need to find a new company. All suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

There are a number of printing companies out there, including Walgreens and WalMart, but if you're wanting a print-on-demand publisher, Lulu.com prints both paperbacks and hardbacks. They print large format books routinely. Although CreateSpace.com, a subsidiary of Amazon, does color printing of paperbacks, I've not been impressed by their color output quality except for their paperback covers, which are not bad at all. If you decide to use CreateSpace, I recommend that you publish the book as color, even if your images are in black and white, because the output quality appears better on the "color" paper. CreateSpace does not print larger than 8.5x11.

I know Lulu very well - they are here in Raleigh and a former customer of mine for digital storage and do great work. Just one caveat whoever you use: be sure to carefully proof your work, especially formatting, and look at a proof copy before printing in mass. A friend of mine had her novel published, and sent the word document to the publisher without either viewing a proof or selecting the correct view in Word. She had a hundred or so copies published, and there were long empty spaces between sentences that turned a 300 page book into 600 pages and looked silly.

Bay Photo is the best. They even have an optional 6 color printing along with the stay flat pages.

How many have you used to come to that determination? What printers and paper do they use?

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have narrowed my next book project down to Mixbook, Collage.com, Whitewall, Snapfish, or Bay Books. These are the only companies that offer a 100 page large landscape shaped book with lay-flat pages. Adoramapix gets great reviews on printing quality but they allow only 70 pages in the lay-flat format. That's just not enough for a 2 week adventure filled trip. Mixbook offers downloadable software like I'm used to with My Publisher. Has anyone on the UHH used this company?

I agree -- proofing is essential! For text proofing, even if you use a superior proofer like "WhiteSmoke," nothing can replace having someone other than yourself proof your work. It's expensive to hire a professional to do it, so try to find a friend who is good at it who will do it for lower cost or free. Proofing the format almost always needs the involves the author of the book, and for picture books, the author absolutely MUST examine a proof carefully. Otherwise, you have no one to blame but yourself for disasters big and small.

Hi UHH! I'm Meghan with PrestoPhoto and a forum member pointed us over here to help if we can. MyPublisher took us off guard too, so we're trying to do our best to fill in. An engineer has whipped up a special PDF processor for downloaded MyPublisher PDF's to convert full wrap covers and dust jacket end flaps.

We could really use help just by uploading some the MyPub Digital PDF files from the their website to ours, so we can see how our PDF processor handles all the different sizes and formats. Here is a direct link for comparison and how to upload https://www.prestophoto.com/create/mypublisher-printing

My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you login to the *mypublisher website* and download digital PDF's of *all* your "My Projects" to your desktop. It's probable those will be inaccessible at some point down the road, and you might need a reprint. We don't have the large 15x11.5 nor lay flats but with enough cheers, maybe I can convince the production line for at least for the XXL size. ;-) I'd be happy to answer any other questions. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. Love My Publisher. Have tried Shutterfly, Apple, Aperture and Mosaic books. None compare to quality and price of my publisher. And I don't think shutgerfly is going to offer what my publisher did. At least they haven't yet. I do like Artifact Uprising. I haven't done a larger book with them yet but I like the small book I tried out. Need to see if they have a layflat that isn't too thick. All the lay flat options elsewhere are for very thick pages. I hope you find something you like and post about it.

Another vote for Bay Photo - their work and customer service is first rate. A couple of nights ago, I uploaded a file for a 16x20 mounted print. It was late, I had numerous copies of the file, and attached the web JPEG version - 750KB by mistake. About 4 hours later, I realized what I had done and tried to cancel the order, but it had already been printed. I haven't received it yet, but I can't imagine what a 16x20 from a 750KB JPEG will look like 🙀. Anyway, long story short, the next morning I received an (unsolicited) email from Chelsea in customer service apologizing for not being able to cancel the order in time, but offering to reprint it with the correct file for 1/2 price. Now I consider that excellent customer relations and an endorsement of their company.

It seems to me that good customer service would have been to notify you before they printed it that the file was not adequate for a print that large and ask if you have a bigger file.

Good point. I think part of the reason may have been that I use their economy/pro service (no color correction, etc.), so they may assume I know what I'm doing when I submit a print, but I'm just guessing.

There is a bookmaker module in Lightroom. Without clicking on the Send link, it looks like http://www.blurb.com

I recently used Lightroom's Book module and Blurb to make a book of my granddaughter's first year. I took two images from each month, one serious pic, and one comical. They did a really good job and the price was very reasonable. They often have 40% off specials right on the website. Laying out the book in LR was quite easy.

I'm totally in the same boat and LOVED MyPublisher. I need a new product that will do 100 pages in lay flat style and has downloadable software. Surely someone will fill this gap!?!
