This is all opinion, and offered for you to consider. I found the 1.4 converter caused blur on both my 40-150mm and a borrowed 300mm f/4. It can be cured by adjusting the focus in camera. I don't remember how with out looking it up. Do it before you leave and try it a few times. The 300mm is amazingly sharp, and I don't know at what distance you will be shooting in the Galapagos, but that lens really reaches out. It will focus down to 5 or so feet, but the DOF at that distance is almost nothing. Check with the guide about the distance on most of your shots while there. IMHO I would not hesitate to go with just the 12-100mm and the 40-150mm Pro lenses plus the 1.4 converter. The 12-100mm will be great for around town and indoors because of the superb stabilization of the camera (and no need for a tripod). The 40-150mm for everything else. If you see you need the 300mm, you might need a tripod. I rested it on my left elbow and got good shots, but that position can get tiresome after an hour or two. Have fun and please post your pictures.
