I am looking to buy this lens, but I found one price at AMAZON for $396.95
EBAY'S price was $223.99
WALMART'S price was $239.00
Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
I bought mine refurbished from Cameta camera. It was in perfect condition and works flawlessly. Free shipping and a one year warranty.
The Walmart one is probably grey market at such a low price.
I just bought a refurbished one from NikonUSA for $199 less 20% for a total of $179, shipping included. Haven't been able to get out yet but have the Dayton airshow coming up in May and the Red Bull air race here in Indianapolis in October that should provide many opportunities. It's going to take some getting used to but that's what a hobby is, isn't it?

Thanks for all the Honest information. I decided to buy the Nikon Refurbished AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300 from CAMETA CAMERA for $199.00 / 90 day Warranty from Nikon plus a 1-year Warranty from Camera. Again thanks for all your Help. Take Care.

I was just thinking about this lens compared to Nikon's 70 - 300 mm. Any comparison would be appreciated. I guess that maybe I should have made my own post. Let's see what develops..... Pun intended.

Nikon controls pricing, so I suspect the cheaper ones were not imported by Nikon USA - no warranty service.

Walmart usually does not sell gray market.
Walmart may not, but they also act as a host for businesses that do. Same as Amazon.
You can buy a refurbished lens for about $200. If you wish you can buy a third party warranty through B&H or Adorama. The new lens is $396. The Walmart price has to be grey market or refurbished as Nikon USA controls the price. This lens while of good quality has to be considered a throw away at the refurbished price. Have you thought that you could buy two refurbished for the price of a new one. I would buy from B&H and Adorama both give excellent service. If you have a problem they will make it right.

If the main use of the lens is for shooting an air show, the 70-300 vr would in my opinion be the better choice. I believe it focuses faster and is quite sharp. For a just walk around lens that handles both up close and distance ok, the 18-300 vr wouldn't be too bad. Keep in mind, the 70-300 is a FX lens and works well on FX as well as DX cameras.
Can we assume the prices were for new equipment on all three sites? If so then gray market is the most likely answer as stated by several others. Also I noticed on the B&H page it stated VRII and all of the pictures of the lens everywhere including B&H shows VR only on the lens barrel. Lens shopping can be quite confusing. No?
I had one of these on my D7100. Photos above 250mm are soft to say the least but an ok lens.
Thanks for the information, Leon. Exactly what I was hoping for.
