June 24 I have a wedding to attend near ASPEN, CO. Leaving the JUNE 17 and driving the entire trip. Stopping at 2 locations in MO. to visit cousins. After the wedding we will be driving to Seattle, WA. and then heading south and hugging the coast in WA and OR, eventually ending up on the Pacific Coast Highway in California. We will take that to LA and then head East to Las Vegas. Then we will head to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge and after that journey on home. We plan on being gone for about 4 weeks and stopping at SOME of the sites along the way on the west coast and other locations while heading East.

My question is, without stopping at ALL the wonderful sites along the way can we do it in 4 weeks?

I know there will be a lot of suggestions but how about some keys locations to visit?

Thanks.

If you like old cars, Americas Car Museum in Seattle is a must.

If you are restricted to 4 weeks, leave your camera art home, otherwise you will NEVER make it. Use your cell phone along the way, if you are not driving, tho take pictures without stopping. There are far too many photo ops along that entire route. Using your cell phone will allow you to catalog a location with GPS, so you might be able to revisit at a later date to get proper photos.

Do not leave your camera at home. My goodness what a terrible suggestion!

You might want to avoid cal. Rt. 1 near big sur. They had a landslide and knocked out bridges and road on both sides of big sur. Will be months in repair.

I'm in NW Oregon (Portland). Hwy 101 is a beautiful drive and will easily add many hours to your drive south. We've had so much rain lately that several places along 101 have had landslides that have closed 101 for a day or longer. Knowing this, be sure to check with ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) for the condition of the Hwy before heading out DAILY! Failure to do so may add DAYS to your travel. They have the most reliable and up to the minute information. If you aren't prepared and just drive, I can nearly guarantee you will get stuck at some point and have to backtrack to the nearest bypass. DO NOT RELY ON A DEVICE (smartphones, tablets) FOR YOUR INFORMATION! A simple call to ODOT will guarantee the latest up to the minute information.

Since you will be in Aspen be shure to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It is beautiful. The drive from Aspen to Denver, well worth the drive.

I got one question. Do you have room in the back seat? Sounds like a great trip.

Check the detour off PCH (Hwy 1) just north of Big Sur in California.... all the heavy rains this year badly damaged a bridge there and it's having to be torn down and replaced. Local TV news showed them using a wrecking ball on it. It will be least a couple years before that bridge reopens (and, no doubt, at least 150% over budget). Until it's replaced, some detour will be necessary. I don't know the details.

EDIT: Ah, I see there was an earlier post about this.

Yes, you can do it in 4 weeks. I've done the drive in a lot less.... 9 or 10 days from Colorado to Southern Calif., then up the coast to Oregon, Washington and even some of British Columbia, then returning from Seattle to Colorado. It's a lot of driving, made probably 2-3 days longer since you are coming from all the way back east and stopping in Mo.

But 4 months would be better than 4 weeks... You will miss a lot more than you'll have time to stop and see along the way. Set some priorities, based upon what you'd enjoy and plan your stops carefully.

I have way too many possible points of interest along your route to try to list them here... Plus any suggestions would be based on my interests, not yours. So buy some books, do some online searches and make a plan for yourself.

Timing can be important. The 65 or 70 miles from San Francisco to Santa Cruz on Hwy 1 is a beautiful drive that might take 1.5 hours on a weekday afternoon when there's little traffic.... or take most of a full day to drive on a sunny Summer weekend when everyone and their dogs head for the coast!

You may need to alter your coast highway trip through Calif. as hwy 1 is closed north of big Sur because a bridge is out! I wouldn't miss the Redwoods on 101 South and that takes you to SF! Anything from Marin to Monterey is great and then continue South on 101 to Santa Barbara.

There is nothing wrong with learning good habits from the get go - which is to read every other post, because you are like the 6th to post the same exact info.

BTW, welcome to UHH

I'm going to assume that the Grand Canyon is on your itinerary - either the north or south rim. I have found driving across country that sometimes driving through the small towns or taking the two-lane roads yields marvelous photography opportunities. But be sure to write down where you are!
Or carry a GPS logger to tag your photos. I use an I-gotU GT-100 unit that synchronizes with the date/times on the photos (camera clock must be exact), but there are other options. Knowing where one was when a photo was taken is a big help when sorting out a tour/trip.

Another option is to take photos of descriptive signs.

The San Diego Zoo is not just any zoo. It (along with the Safari Park) is larger and more animal friendly than most smaller zoos. Most exhibits are state of the art open areas. Using mostly moats to keep visitors safe from the more dangerous animals. In addition it is located in Balboa Park, where many Museums are located.

I see - would you like to personally reside there for a more "advanced race" to be entertained by? A zoo is a zoo, and if I was suggesting for an east coast residence visiting the west, kept animals would never cross my mind. Death Valley, Sierra Nevadas, Red woods? YES!!!
