The worm is even better fish bait if you halve it and turn each half inside out....I have used them since I was a boy.

I have three of these trees in my yard. Kind of rare, and really pricey if you go to get one to plant. Just wondering if any one could guess it's name. :)The flowers are surprisingly beautiful. And the fruit or seed pods are pretty cool too.

Yes, this is a Northern Catalpa. It is an important host tree for moth and butterfly reproduction and fish bait.

I grew up with one in the front yard - the reference to clean up is well taken, but when those pretty blossoms fall they are very slippery. And in the Autumn the seed pods are about a foot long, kinda like beans.

It is definately a Catalpa tree. We are in Indiana and have a very old huge one in our yard. The flowers are beautiful and very fragent. The pods are really cool and look neat when they dry up. It does make a mess, but if you live in the country like we do, you don't have to worry about it as nature takes care of it!

Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalpa and http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/faculty/carr/bignoni.htm for info. Fishone0 recognized the similarity to Desert Willow, and I really like Tecoma stans, both in the same family. Delightful pics, beautiful flowers.

Catalpa. It belongs to the Royal Paulownia family of trees. Also called the Princess tree. We have one in our front yard. They are from India I believe.

Erv, just a note, my Catalpa trees bloomed in April. The blooms look the same everywhere. My trees are young, only about two inches in diameter.

Nice shot Emmett !
My small one is around 8" that's the one in the picture. The next one is around 18-20" and the biggest is 36" or more. And it looks like it is almost hit it's life span. :( I will get a shot of it and post tomorrow. I didn't think they were that popular now days. I priced one at the nursery and almost fell down when he told me the price. :)
