Canon Pro-100 vs Epson Artisan 1430

You may have seen this before in another section of the UHH, but am having issues keeping track of who's on first, so I'll re-post my question here stated in a different way.
My Pixma ip4000 (vintage 2005) is still running good, but I fear ink will soon be difficult to get. So I'm researching what I want to do.
My wife does scrap booking and wants to print on 12x12 paper. Eventually, I'm hoping to do some photo printing in the near future. How much of each is still to be determined.
If I have to dump my Pixma iP4000, I'll need something to do my general document printing as well as scrap booking & photos. I'm getting the message that the Pro-100 will be overkill for this - general doc printing. What about the Artisan 1430? Still overkill? Trying to only have 1 printer, but if that is not possible, then I guess I'll need 2 printers if I still want to do large format.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I would suggest A Pro 100 from B&H, it will cost you $130 after rebate. Then purchase a all-in-one laser printer. You get two printer for the price of one. You may also find a Pro 100 on Craigslist. That's how I got mine, $150, unopened box. People get the printer as part of a camera package sold by Canon and then decide to sell them.

I think the key factor here is 6 in the Epson vs 8 ink cartridges' in the Canon. Good rule of thumb the more ink colors and gray's the better the print. I have a Pro 100 and couldn't be happier, it's a great printer.

Either. Go for the better deal. Try B&H first.

I got my Pro-100 on Craigslist for $90 brand new, missing the ink. I bought ink on eBay for $29 and so I got it for $119 total. Yes, the ink was reman cartridges, but the've worked fine since the day I installed them. I still haven't run out and I've printed a dozen or more photos on some large paper.

Watcher - sorry I didn't reply sooner. Had something come up.
Thanks for the lead. I checked B&H & Adorama. Both had the same deal going. I've been buying my gear from Hunt Photo & Video in Manchester, NH. Checked with them and they had the unit in stock, would do a price match, so I went down there and picked it up. Just waiting for the package of 13x19 Canon Luster paper to come in. Overall, the net price after the $250.00 rebate is $129.99. How could I pass up a deal like that?
I'll be setting up the unit today and run some 4x6s to see what it does. The only issue I may encounter is that my monitor is not calibrated, so WISIWYG may not be true to "life". I'll try to remember to report back on what happens. I'm going to set up my desktop & laptop for wireless. Last time I tried that with my Pixma iP4000, it took a lot time and effort. Hopefully not the Pro-100.

A monitor calibration and profiling kit will pay for itself very quickly by reducing paper and ink waste for remakes.

Jay: now that you have the Pro 100 you should have a look at these two videos. They talk about never turning off the printer and printing something very small (postage stamp size) every sixty hours. In doing so, you reset the internal timer that causes the printer to do an ink purge whenever you wake it up. One video lets you hear the printer purging ink after being idle for more than sixty hours.

This is all about saving ink, prevent clogging and the overloading of the waste ink pad with unneeded purges.
And as someone stated in another thread, printing photos in standard mode will also save ink.

I will definitely watch them.

Here's another question. Been trying to print the user guide (yes I know it's over 800 pages!), but I'm the kind of person who likes to hold a book. Tried printing to PDF. It goes through the motions, but unable to find the file. Tried to start the print on my printer. Again went through the motions, but nothing happened. Is there a PDF version of the user guide somewhere?

I have the 1430 with a continous ink sistem installed by me and a Printer potty to collect wasted ink. I have a key to reset the waste pad counter and also use Qimage to overdrive the DPI to 1440. I have the Datacolor Elite Printer/Monitor calibrator with a colorimeter and I created my own ICC profiles. With that set up I use third party ink and paper and don't mind about the cost of paper and ink when I want to print just for fun. I print beatiful pics at lower cost.
