This afternoon, a ban was initiated for a number of airlines flying into the US from the Middle East and North Africa, for any electronics larger than a mobile phone. A CNN.com article is posted here, for your review and convenience: http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/21/news/airline-electronics-ban-explainer/index.html
The article goes on to say that the UK is looking at also copying this practice.
It is not time to panic, but it is something to carefully monitor. The damned airlines lose, have frequent thefts and generally bash luggage now; what would they do to protect large volume camera gear, if this is more generally adopted?

Most airlines only cover lost luggage to a $500 value. Lawyers will have fun with this!

Hard case with lock. I used to take my golf clubs on trips every week...no issues other than the hassle of checked baggage.

Best,

According to American Airlines and Qatar Airlines they do not make themselves responsible for checked luggage.

I am curious how others interpret the ban on electronics. Would a lens be considered as electronics? It has some electronics in it, but I doubt if the average airline security person understands that. On the other hand, would a lens be banned just because they are electronic/camera equipment and therefore "guilty by association". If it was an issue one could show a security person that the lens was hollow and didn't contain anything. Would it be possible to carry all of your lenses on board and check only bodies (Oh, don't forget to take your batteries out before checking your luggage). Perhaps one could rent a body locally, but use your personal lenses.

"This ban has nothing to do with security. It is to overcome the financial advantage the foreign carriers have over the American carriers. Thank you, Mr. Trump."

Totally agree. This is to give the US airlines a competitive advantage over certain mid-eastern airlines that are known and favored for their superior service. Terrorists will be clever enough to choose a different airport.

Last year returning home(USA) via Munich I was required there to PROVE all my electronic gear was working. For cameras you had to turn it on and then the security man passed his hand in front of the lens to see if it appeared on the viewfinder/screen, while tablets and phones had to work. There were several people held up and frantically recharging their equipment. They, the security, said if it didn't work you either tossed it in a trash barrel or you'll not board your flight. They are getting serious.

I'm glad I did my Turkey trip last fall. I had a carry-on that was overweight, but because it was all camera equipment and 'COULD NOT BE CHECKED' (according to the ticket agent) she let it go.

Some have suggested about shipping stuff. I think I'd be more worried about my goods being shipped to a foreign country than being with me on a plane. My luck with shipping stuff is that it gets hung up in customs for months and never actually arrives at its destination.

Those carriers do provide superior service to any US carrier. Just completed a trip to Bangkok on Emirates.

That makes me wonder how they'd handle my film gear?

when I flew early this year the TSA looked at my gear like they'd never seen anything like it, like they were expecting me to turn the camera on and an LCD light up or something.

As a business traveler who traveled both domestic and international. Always shipped ahead to the hotel. Told hotel it was coming.

FEDEX domestic/ HDL international. Never a problem.

Hi,

I have considered this many times but have not done it. It obviously worked for you? Were you sending it to a hotel? I'm just afraid it will get lost. Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

It's good you didn't have any of that new edible camera gear.

Does that mean that photography is now officially a "Ph Art"?

I will be faced with this ban since I'll be flying from Haifa to Philadelphia on Turkish Airlines with a changeover in Istanbul. So, foreign carrier (one of the best, by the way) and banned airport. I will have two Fuji X-T2's with me, two lenses, and a Nikon flash. No problem taking the cameras over with me, but a problem taking them back with me. There is no way that I will be touring the pyramids, Karnak, Wadi Rum, and Petra and not be taking my cameras. Shipping them back is prohibitively expensive to say nothing of the complications with US Customs. Now I have to buy a Pelican case, two Pelican cable locks, and make sure that the equipment is listed on my floater insurance policy. I have to ask the insurance company how to prove that the cameras were stolen out of checked luggage, as they are almost certainly to be.

This ban has nothing to do with security. It is to overcome the financial advantage the foreign carriers have over the American carriers. Thank you, Mr. Trump.

My son who works for a multinational company in NYC. Hates like his father, carry on. Which I don't understand. They fly business and the problem of carry on is no problem. Not as it is in coach. He sends ahead his camera stuff that he wants to use on his vacation to an office in that city. They, in turn, have it delivered to his hotel on the day of his check in. Reverses the process when going home.

So your argument as one of the privileged 1% you are suggesting that this isn't a problem for everyone else?

Sure that can be done, but the tickets cost more than the equipment after a small number of flights.

Most decent lenses are bigger than a smart phone....
