That's a new one. I guess anytime someone wants something sent to a different address, or even their address, you need to call and check out everything.

What happened to you was the scammer saw the sale, then sent a photoshop scanned pic of the buyer saying to send it to this address. Did the legit buyer really want it sent to a different address? It may have been the original buyer didn't want it sent anywhere different than his home address.

These crooks are really getting smart. I've seen them make up an entire website of products, then demand greenback, prepaid payments.

There really was no legit buyer, just a legit account that the scammer hacked. The account holder didn't know anything about it untill they noticed this large payment from their account. Of course the account holder could have been in on the scam, but Paypal supposedly checked it out.

I've both bought and sold cameras on Craigslist. Yes, I've had buyers from far off places offer me more than I was asking. Obviously a scammer. My policy is cash on delivery, local pickup only. If they want to fly in all the way from West Africa, I'm totally OK with that. LOL

When you ship, UPS, COD, Cash or Certified Funds, Signature required, and insure the package.

I had an EBay buyer stop payment on a Money Order, so things do happen.

I have also had a buyer return a different item, and he received a refund,

eBay and PayPal is very good at protecting the buyer, if they follow the rules.

The seller is not so well protected., and the long time seller try's very hard to satisfy the buyer..

With PayPal you physical address is verified.

When in doubt, stay out...

It will cost you a few percent to accept a PayPal payment. You can wait till you receive payment to deliver the camera. I guess he feels safer not bringing cash to the meeting.

Receiving payment does not mean you get the cash. They have a policy on holding your loot until a few days after the package is actually received. I sold a camera on Ebay about a year ago and there was never anyone at the buyers address to sign for it. The buyer was out of town so I had to wait something like two weeks for his return and after the package was signed for, a few more days, "until my funds were available", and then pay another little spiffy to Paypal to get my $$$$ and not leave it in my account. Unfortunately they have a lock on a good number of online transactions so your options are limited, but I am not a fan of some of their policies. Check it out with them before using them. If you can get the buyer to send a USPS money order (NO OTHER KIND) then you are in good shape. You can cash it at any post office before you ship.

Never had a problem with PayPal but it's well known that Craigslist is a haven for fences.

Agreed. I would rather deal with an established fence company instead of a fly-by-night operating from his backyard.

Smells like a scam. The value of Craigs list is local buyers and cash transactions. If you are willing to ship then look to E-Bay, and paypal there is the best way to go. But you pay for that security, about 10%. But paypal from TX and ship to OH smells to high heaven. Better to refuse the deal, and turn it in to Craigs for them to track down as well!

Ditto! I have sold many items on Craigslist, the key to staying safe and not getting ripped off has been only selling locally, meeting in a very public place and sell for cash only!! It's always good to have a back up person nearby just in case. One time I wasn't so sure about the buyer so my cousin Vinny was parked right outside in his black Cadillac with dark tinted windows.

I have sold cameras, musical instruments, an Apple iMac and smart phones on Craigslist. I have met buyers in Pizza Restaurants, a bank lobby, Dunkin Donuts, Panera Bread, Staples Office supply, Home Depot and even the parts department of a large car dealership. Haven't tried meeting anyone in a dark alley yet and never would! GRIN and I would never ship an item.

Yes, fake emails, phishing emails, scam calls you name it. I get calls at least two times week that my computer has all kind viruses and they want me to allow them to get hold of my computer to clean it up. And arrest warrant if I don't pay IRS overdue taxes.

I got a call at work once about my computer having viruses....I told the guy "Well gee....today's my lucky day! I just happen to have IT in today working on it. I'll have them address that issue as well..." Lots of ummms....and errrssss...and "Oh no....you must let me fix it for you..." I told him "Nope....we pay this dude a hell of a lot of money to keep us up running and happy. I'm going to let him earn his pay." Click.

We've sold a fair amount on Craigslist. Always get the scammers....it's such fun to reply to them "Due to all the low life scum sucking POS scammers on Craigslist, I can only deal in cash...tell you what...you give that check to your shipper, have them cash it, and bring me my part." Gotta love it. Hubby got a text the other day that sounded scammy though....we're in Indiana, and someone from PA wanted to buy his vintage John Deere yard tractor. At first we were going to blow them off, but they were very convincing. Wanted lots of pictures, serial numbers, close ups of the implement connections, etc. Further conversation...he's a restorer/collector. Knew more about the damn tractor than my hubby did. Had a friend here in Indiana, and they arranged the transaction, friend showed up with cash in hand, and the tractor was loaded up and on it's way to PA. Just shows you never know. Always pays to be very careful though....

Tell them to send money to you , and that the camera is not leaving the house tell you have money in hand , or send it c.o.d. cash on delivery. By mail or U.P.S.

That is not allowed by PP. It must be shipped to the PP verified address, otherwise the payee can deny receipt and you're screwed. I've done transactions from CL via PP and this sounds like a scam if I ever heard one. I create and send a detailed PP invoice to their PP verified email. When paid I create the shipping label via PP that prints their verified address. Ship it and it's done. This is how everyone is protected, PERIOD. Advise him of this process and if he's unwilling, then yeah, it's a scam for certain.

Me too! The problem is they are targeting the masses by stating that my Windows computer has issues. I say, "that is great but I only own Mac computers." "Click" is the only response I get as they promptly hang up.

Geez, I get the dumber ones. I tell them my computer is a Mac. They tell me to press the Start button......

That is a new twist. I've seen alot of different pages hacked/copied, but this is a new one.

The only safe way to do business on craigslist is to contact the buyer at their address to make sure it's really them, and then Paypal to make sure payment is real.

No, and you won't, unless it's not really Paypal. I've deleted at least 8 forged attempts by crooks who've made their own paypal page with their own link to steal from you. Once you click their link, they got you, and then you find out it really wasn't paypal.

Be CAREFUL. I was scammed selling a camera via Pay Pal. He made the Pay Pal account look very real.
