I am not pleased with the prices of XQD cards, but I don't think the money saved will be a comfort to me after purchasing a nice camera. My apprehension may be unfounded, but why increase my chances of having an issue and being unhappy?

I agree that XQD cards are pricey, but cutting edge tec is always expensive at first. I'm hoping the price will drop in a year or two. That being said I did buy one with my cash back bonus (so in some regards free) and it is blazing fast and I'm glad I did. My thinking was if the format doesn't fly Sony and Lexar might stop making them, so I bit the wallet and helped prime the pump. I don't regret the purchase.
P.S. I got a 128GB Sony card because it wasn't much more that the 64GB and some of the Lexar's have had issues in the D500.

Been discussed, or perhaps it was about refurbished SD cards, what ever that could mean.

A refurb card, like a refurb camera or lens is a card that has been opened or returned to the dealer shortly after it was bought by the customer. The importer will go through it to make sure it performs to specifications.
I have bought refurb SD cards and never an issue.
As has been suggested buy one and try it to see if it fulfills your expectations. The only problem with a used media card is age. If it is old it will surely fail but refurb usually refers to a practically new media and in many cases that media has never been used.

Is a CF Card the same as an SD card? I've never heard of them.

A completely different card. It is also a different size, being more than twice the physical size and perhaps as much as 3 times the size of SD cards. Some cameras, like my Canon 7D Mark II have two card slots, one for SD and one for CF. At the time I purchased my cards last year, the fastest CF cards were much faster than the fastest SD cards. Not sure if that has changed since then. They've been around a long time and were more prevalent in older cameras.

That's about it other than performing a memory check (which would require a program to read/write each memory cell).

I have bought them ( 8 gb, 16 gb, 32 gb)directly from the maker, Delkin Devices, online for about 3 years and all continue to work perfectly, at about half or more off the new price.

I've purchased SanDisk refurbs, but directly from the SanDisk Outlet. Usually these are either overstock or returned and tested to perform as new. No telling where the e bay cards come from or whether they are genuine or fakes.

Test it and mark it refurb, sell at a lower price with less of a warrantee.

That sounds like a complete re-format to me.

You can refurbish your own cards, re format them.

To me this has a bad aroma. The important question is, by whom was the card refurbished? The manufacturer? Joe Blow? And who sells cards with a open it try it return it policy?

If the chip has bad memory blocks you can program around them. Of course the chip is now smaller in capacity and should be so labeled. I'd still be wary of non manufacturer sellers as there are too many Chinese clones and fake chips on the market.

I recently purchased 3 refurbished Sandisk 8GB CF cards. I intended to buy 2 of them but somehow ended up buying 3 by mistake. I haven't used them yet so will let you know if I have any problems with them. Refurbished might mean a bit of a clean & formatting the cards - I can't think what else they might do - maybe a check to see if they work.
