Hi Hogs
I wonder if anyone has had this problem and if so maybe someone had it repaired by Nikon and about how much the repair would be.
It's a Nikon AF-S 28-70 2.8 D
All works good the auto focus is fast but after a few times focusing, it just stops until you turn the focus barrel a little.
The lens is in great shape glass and body, Not sure what Nikon would charge, even about
Thank you, for any input

Maybe you would require a Nikon AF-S 28-70 2.8G lens, if that model lens is available, not sure, do you have FX or DX equipment? I do not have the lens in question, I am a newbie myself, and have all G lens, no issues. Nikon D3300 camera.

Go to Nikons website and go to the service page, you can get an estimate there.

I had the same problem with the first version of the AF-S 70-200 2.8 lens. It was the focus motor. If you plan to keep the lens, and it is a sharp lens, the repair will be worth it. The cost to repair my lens in October, 2014, was $550.00. I used Authorized Photo Repair in Morton Grove, IL and was without the lens for two weeks with UPS Ground shipping both ways. Good luck with your lens.

The quote I just received to fix a different focus problem on a Nikon lens (the lens focused accurately but didn't signal the camera that it had focused) was $275.

The problem you have is with the internal AF-S focus motor. That was one of the very first generation of that motor and its getting quite dated now. Its a very fine lens and would be well worth the cost of repair, in my opinion.

Do a cleaning to the lens and camera contacts

KEH repairs lenses at fixed rates. I think for this type lens the charge is $135, but that may be an old figure.

The usual fee is around $200 for a lens overhaul. Just had mine done from Nikon.

Just got the same lens back from KEH for repair. They said the motor needed replacing but Nikon wouldn't sell one to them so I have to send it to Nikon.

So that should tell everyone that KEH is NOT a Nikon authorized repair facility.

This is a new Nikon policy. TCR also has done professional repairs for Nikon and now can no longer get parts under new and changed policies.

Policy changed a little over three years ago when Nikon refused to sell current camera model parts to any repair shops that refused to send their techs to Nikons repair schools to learn how to PROPERLY install and calibrate those parts. Any repair shop sending their techs to these annual schools are listed as "Authorized Repair Centers" and can get any parts they need. Its a very simple premise actually, and insures the customers are getting their product repaired by someone who actually KNOWS how to make that repair properly.
