I've been going to Oshkosh off-and-on since '97and taken 000's of pics. I usually stay for the week. I may not use the long end as much as I think I might, but will certainly try to use the entire capacity, from 70-400. The reason I'm renting the lens is because I've never used premium glass before nor as long of a lens...figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. I've taken plenty of pics at 300 and sometimes with I had a longer lens just because I liked the particular angle the plane was flying at. The mark 2 lens also happens to have significantly faster focusing than the first model and I've occasionally had trouble with my Tamron SP 70-300, but I'm afraid to take it in to get a repair estimate (sometimes it makes a whiny-grindy sound, but it doesn't focus). I also will be bringing my 17-50 2.8 and probably my 105 macro. Are you going to Oshkosh? I've done rideshare a few times and gotten my gas paid for...twice in different years by the same guy...from Australia. One time I picked him up at a hotel across from MDW and once waited for his call from ORD - I was waiting in the cellphone lot. Last time I went up with him he brought his son. The dad is currently (slowly) building, from plans, a single seater wood plane of Australian design. He hasn't made much progress in the last year or so, but he has it on wheels now...just got a pic of it the other day...said it was 35C (95F) while he was working on the gear and was going to wait until it got cooler to tackle the control cables!

Sounds like a great adventure. Don't forget to post some amazing shots after the "fly in". I hope the lens does all the things you need. Sounds like it will. Maybe your friend will have his plane closer to finished next year.

One of my friends built a jet plane for his own use. (He is an engineer and former test pilot for a MAJOR aircraft builder) He showed us, many times, how the progress was going. What an exciting adventure he was having. It has been done, and he has been flying it for a few years. Pretty neat!

Several of my Oshkosh shots got on AvWeb, one as a POTW, one got POTM for EAAs website and one is in a book for charity. Can't beat Oshkosh for great action!

EVERY, aviation lover should do Oshkosh at least once.......flying in is such an incredible experience as well.

Several years ago, when my brother was still renting, he and I flew in in an Archer. Quite an experience!! To see long lines of planes following the railroad tracks from Rippon was amazing...and ATC...what job they do every year (e.g. "red Cessna, rock your wings. Follow the Stearman and land on the orange dot."). Now my brother is a co-owner in a 182 and living in TN. I'm driving up this year. A few years ago someone posted a sat pic of the complex. I found my tent in Camp Scholler and he found his plane in the North 40. We were about 2 miles apart!

I'm told that those controllers request that assignment because they enjoy it so much. Leaving was just as intense....four aircraft at a time lined up, two by two.
