For me, the B&W image is more engaging with interesting textures and shades of grey.

A very appealing photo. In most cases, including this one, I will choose color over B&W. After all, we see in color, and if you take the color out of a nature scene like this one, then it seems to me that you lose some of the natural beauty.

Depends on your purpose. I'd opt for the color image which has a somewhat sensual aspect with the strength of the backlighting. The B&W can be very effective if you look for a darker intent since the separation of light is limited making the image appear flatter overall. Each can be purposeful. Your choice is what counts since mine is just one opinion.

I prefer the black and white version of this photo. The color is nice but I don't
think it sets it apart from other photos like the B&W does.

Ripple1124, Both are very good and I do prefer the B&W for all the great reasons that B&W can always be superior to color.

For me the color version is more inviting and pleasing.

The b&w is an interesting study of textures of the foreground tree; for that reason, I'd crop some off the top, perhaps to just above the sun. You could further emphasize the shapes of the roots with selective lightening.

The color imparts a welcoming sense of place and a warm feeling of perfect autumn weather.

I have no preference because they are very different stories. Well done on both!
