(i'm sure you have... the work with print enhacement to work the area around the light.... just suggestions.. its all hard. here is an example of the shuttle before and after print enhancement.t

Welcome to Day 168 :) Today it's sort of a confession day. We get to admit what gives us the most trouble photographically. I don't expect everybody to be saying great photos today...I expect it's going to be more of a problem solving day. This one was really tough for me because there are so many things that I need a lot of work on .. macros, still lifes, portraits, the list goes on and on .. it was difficult to choose just one. So I decided to go with night photography. This subject is really bad for me .. I can't see at night so I can't tell if things are in focus .. unless I go right after sunset .. So I waited until 11 pm when it was really dark out to show you just how bad it is LOL. Here are my terrible examples of what not to do LOL. These are all shot on manual.. 30 sec. exposures. Let's see yours :)

Terrible examples, I guess that's what this is about.LOL Well, my problem is power lines, they seem to get into everything in the city. And of course the BLOWN OUT sky, I get the buildings in good light but the sky is terrible. YEA, I forget to put on the Circular Polarizer sometimes, or shoot into the brighter areas. Well, I'm off to the Chalk Art Festival, so will see you all later. NO editing has been done to these photos, straight out of camera. Nice examples so far today, I'm sure everyone else has PERFECT PICTURES, and don't need to post anything?

This was done with simple burning in (on midtones) i'm sorry the color changed at the bottom of the dome but that happens i could have corrected that but just wanted to show you.. Remeber Digital Print enhancement isn't always a bad thing to do.

yes that is much better...but Im not sure I understand all the stuff you are talking about...I do use burst sometimes unfortunately it goes very very slow under these very low light circumstances...and I showed you the one without his face intentionally....privacy concerns...should i not worry...I did not have his permission to post and it was a special ed student inside his school.

Nan... you got it.. the blur doesn't bother me (thats because of the slow shutter speed but I know you knew that)... and to correct the image i used only two things Levels.. to correct the exposure and decrease contrast a little and Variations to get rid of the green yellow by adding magenta and blue... i too don't like to use flash and if you set your camera to shoot sequence shots (if yo have that feature on your camera?) you might have had one with our the blue gown in front of his face.. these are my suggestions... and yes a faster ISO (ASA for us old guys) would have been better, but i always forget to change it back...

low light is a challenge especially for some of us lazies who
prefer not to use a tripod. I suck at indoor shooting unless
I can find some natural light coming thru a window
not to mention I forgot to change the ISO

Jim it depends on your camera
on mine when I am in manual I do have to change both
shutter speed and aperture

that part about telling people what to do is hard for me too....but what I am learning is they dont really mind.

I wanted a shot of the couple at the restarant in front of some bushes I saw where I thought the light was nice...
they wanted to be more in the garden...where the light was not that good...so I did both...then went inside...then I EVEN ASKED if I could go in the Kitchen and you know what...the girl just wanted a minute to put on some lipstick and the guy wanted to get his chef jacket on....

I am forever challenged. MY biggest one is not taking the time to review all the setting on my camera and change to the best one for the situation. Indoor lighting as others have mentioned.

Indoor lighting and finding time for this hobby.
Indoor lighting and finding time for this hobby....

Focusing with indoor lighting and getting the lip in shape after 50 years no play this thing.
Focusing with indoor lighting and getting the lip ...

Getting these four to make a serious pose so I can print a good one for their "Grandma".

Natural light night photography is so dependent on the camera you have. As a journalist, I have to shoot photos at night. The sole reason I bought the 5d's is for low light. My problem is compounded because I can't use a tripod with live action involving people or many times flash. I was taking photos a Christmas boat regatta in Tempe two years ago. I still hadn't reconciled the money I spend on my 5dm2. It was after dark. My photos were fine. I turned on saw a group of photographers with tripods. I was hand holding. They were complaining the boats were going too fast to get good photos. Then I knew I'd spend my money wisely. I just picked up a 5dm3 from a guy who thought it was too complicated. Got a great deal on it. I went to downtown tempe at 10 p.m. and got shots my 5dm2 couldn't take. It's an expensive way to get better night shots but this is where the camera's technical side aids the photographer. Unfortunately, it's very expensive to get sensors that sensitive. I know a lot of people complain about not getting good night shots but unfortunately we are limited by the equipment we have. I'll try to post some night photos when I'm at my other computer.

I just got Elements 8 a few days ago and have been able to remove them from my keepers. I just wish they were not there in the first place. Some times I just need to move to get a different angle.

Wow I'm proud of all of you ... This is helpful to me .. it let's me know where to go with the challenges... and it also let's me know I am not the only one that struggles with these things.
Loguey some wonderful tips you are sharing thank you. We are blessed to have you in our group of friends and family.
One of my biggest problems is I get these ideas in my head and put them down for the daily challenge not even thinking that some can't do them for one reason or another ... I try hard to be generic in my choices ... but then I get half way into the month and realize .. shoot I can't even do that LOL .. You would think I'd at least make it easy on myself wouldn't you hahaha.

I struggled with that for a bit too MM .. then I finally had to accept the fact that they are everywhere. It's not always going to be possible to get that great shot in today's technology based world. Which is a major reason I prefer landscapes to cityscapes ... no darn wires and street lights and signs to deal with.

It took me a long time to realize it wasn't just me. I have two brothers and a sister who sell photos professionally. I always tried to compare myself to them, but I am almost that good now, and even learned that they might take50 photos to get one good one. FUNNY STORY, I started doing HDR because of this site, now my older brother is starting because of my photos he saw.

Great examples and settings info and suggestions. One of many probs is getting excited and not checking settings.I don;t know half of what my cam can do...might say i am intimidated by technology.
