That you take exception to this is your privilege. It does not invalidate the observation however unpleasant it is to you. What you do with this is your own problem, no one else. On that we agree.

I am out of shape, like everyone else. This does not mean I have to try to invalidate the observation because it is true. The observation is impersonal. No one typed 'Don/Dennis/Linda' is out of shape and should exercise, same as no one told me 'YOU are out of shape and YOU must exercise' - I would have started laughing so hard my wife would have come in to share on the joke.

If I type this site is full of cantankerous old farts there is a reason.

Now here something many will really hate....

I am not sure why but you seem to have taken up the banner instead of the OP. If I am shopping and see a terribly obese person near me it seems to be your thought that I am doing a good turn by telling the person they are too heavy and really should do something about it. Of course my reasons are pure since I am only thinking of the total stranger's health. You apparently think I would be justified in performing that service. No matter that the person KNOWS what they look like. No matter they may have a medical problem I am unaware of. No matter it is none of my business.

Here we are on 11 pages of this post because someone decided the reason people buy mirrorless cameras is because they are out of shape and can't carry lots of equipment. While I have not read all of the pages (I do have a life other than UHH) I suspect you have led the charge. Why does it matter to you?

In my camera cabinet I have my FM2 sitting next to my D4s. Don't tell me my cameras aren't getting heavier. At 67 I can mount the D4s with an 800 attached on a heavy tripod, throw it over my shoulder and walk a mile on the beach.

The problem is that at the end of the mile I am really tired and have no idea why I am there.

Seriously? You'd think by age 67 you'd have met at least one person who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis or Parkinson's or balance issues (such as caused by inner ear injury) or another disease/affliction that has nothing to do with weight and exercise.

Surely, as a professional photographer, you have more to offer this forum.

Thanks Linda...goodness...people are really desperate to find something to post about. I posted about my dad yesterday who is nearly 80 wanting to go from a 7DII/Tamron 150-600 to a bridge camera. I don't see how someone wouldn't understand the need.

Did you see the op address anyone directly?

I did not and I still do not do see it.

Such a generic statement should never have raised such a raucous from folks unless they think this is for them, personally. It was not.

Sorry, this is internet. No one knows who you are what you are and what you stand for. Few even care about that. Most of the reactions are telling, a bunch of lost souls who live too much through an illusive 'social connection' that UHH and internet provides.

So one says we are fat and happy but we should exercise? Big deal.

Entertaining thread. But I must say that I agree with Edward Weston: "Anything more than 500 yards from the car is not photogenic."

It must be a big deal to you as you have taken up the banner for the OP. AS
ask yourself why you would do that. Ask yourself why the OP seems no longer here. You are correct. It is a dumb post but both you and the OP should know there are many reasons people go to different cameras. For him to start off telling everyone they are out of shape because they don't want to lug a heavier camera is simply rude. For you to carry his banner for such a dumb post is stupid.

Pray tell, why do you need an admin here?

Seen any personal insults? Bad language?

Probably wants to tell the admin that he has a weight problem.

The great thing about this site is that I no longer have to read the junk that you put out.

Maybe something you are missing is almost all UHH'ers don't want criticism of their photos unless specifically asked for. The OP did not criticize photos but the members themselves. I don't know what vehicle you drive but I suspect if I posted that people who drive with an automatic transmission did so because they were too stupid/uncoordinated to drive a stick, you might be offended if you drove an automatic.

I haven't noticed any outrage from this post at all.

Failure to take responsibility for what, and in who's eyes??? I am responsible for me just as you are responsible for you. But I hold you nor anyone else to my views. I am perfectly happy with me as I am. If you missed one of my earlier posts I have no problem toting two cameras and several lenses and did so all over Europe a couple of years ago.

Maturer??? You must mean more mature. I am 71, have served over 30 years in a combination of combat veteran twice in Vietnam courtesy of the USMC, street cop in Southern CA, and corrections officer starting on death row. I would consider myself a mature person.

I feel a kinship with you. I'm 82 and have had some life-threatening things going on. Had a studio in Claremont, CA and retired to Georgia. It's refreshing to see you're not a gear junkie, with your D7000 and 35mm. Great! Keep on keeping on!

OP's point taken but... I was a working pro. With my wife I had a portrait studio, but also shot a lot on location. I would also assist local commercial photographers. Assisting meant I was their pack mule. Very heavy bags of hot lights, strobes, view cameras, massive tripods & lightstands. I'd love ❤️ to still do that. But I've since had 3 back surgeries and a failed neck surgery. Add to that arthritis and I too look to pack lighter. We had to close our studio because of my pain. I couldn't keep up the required 10-12 hour days. We tried, I'd shoot a session, then lay down for an hour or two before tackling another.

Now I do what I can to keep up with my 18 month old grandson. I use a Nikon D7000, 35mm 1.8, and anything from available light, flip bracket with speedlight & mini soft box, to stands with Paul Buff Ultras and umbrellas.

We can't all exercise. Many days it's all I can do to sit or stand for an extended time. I had to give up drumming in a RnR band too. Now I play occasionally in the church praise band.

It's not as easy as suck it up, drop and give me 20 for everyone.

For my part, I did drop 30-35lbs in the last 6 months hoping it would help the pain. Alas, it didn't.

I'm sorry to step in late. Just got off work.

The OP and rongnogno have a point. If you go back and look at all the previous posts where people say that they are going on a trip and want to know what lenses they should take there are a huge number of people here who try to discourage everyone from taking their big lenses or for that matter any heavy gear because it will be a burden or will be uncomfortable. Some of you immediately use your physical limitations or desire for comfort to try to influence others as to what gear they buy, take on trips, or use.

Now when someone says that we should exercise and be fit rather than make excuses some of you come unglued. It's just an opinion, just like your opinion that light equipment is great. Why should we get so upset about a simple observation.

It should be pointed out that 30 percent of Americans are clinically obese. Lack of exercise is a huge problem in our society.

Sure, some people have physical limitations. Use whatever equipment you want, but don't be so sensitive.

Just look at all the posts about gear on this site. Over and over again people whine about how heavy some gear is and they actually advise others against getting some great quality lenses because they are "too heavy".

If you want to use light equipment, fine, but it's pretty ironic after reading scores of posts where people ridicule or argue with those of us who carry a lot of heavy gear now you that now you would take umbrage at someone just because their opinion is different from your own.

The OP clearly meant no offense, but I guess he hit a nerve with some of you.
