I sold this scanner to my friend in Italy one year ago and now he call me because with Windows 10 the scanner doesn't work , he called the local Nikon importer and the answer was , you have to find an old computer with max window 6 installed otherwise your scanner doesn't work , is no longer produced and Nikon has not the right software to make it working .
this answer from Nikon seems to be not very professional , scanner costs over than 1500 euros ( 1800 US$) and Nikon has to supply the adequate platform to make the scanner useful . Nikon also said if you look into the web you can find a software available to make the scanner compatible with Windows 10.
Now i'm asking someone who can help me to find ad adequate software , my italian friend is loosing any hopes .

I feel your pain. I can be very annoying to have a quality product that you cannot use because there is no software available. I have a scanner that will work on some Win10 machines, but not others. On the other hand, Nikon is not going to continue using its resources to develop updates for old products. You might find something useful here.

It's not Microsoft's responsibility to maintain drivers for different products it' manufacture of the products responsibility. In this case Nikon. There are 3rd party drivers out there that will allow you to use the scanner with Windows 10. One that comes to mind is SilverFast:

Yes go with Vuescan. It has more and better control than the original Nikon software and works with all windows versions. With the professional version of Vuescan you get life long constant updates. We started using it before Nikon stopped supporting the scanner and preferred it over Silverfast. We scan at over 100mb tiff files and have had them published in all sorts of media, including covers of high end magazines. We just had a scanned image of a red velvet ant published in Virginia Wildlife and one of the readers remarked "how detailed the image was". The hairs on the wasp (not really an ant) were extremely sharp and the reds, which are often hard to reproduce, were stunning. Processing in Photoshop is absolutely necessary for pro quality images to be published but it does an excellent job. Fuji films are the easiest but even the old Kodachromes, which are harder to scan, produce sharp vibrant images when processed appropriately. There are many adjustments to make but the directions are good. It does take a long time to set up your scanner but once done, it is automatic. We have 2 Nikon 5000ED scanners with auto feed trays that hold 50 slides. I don't want to make it sound like this is a plug and play you don't have to do anything system. It took me a long time to get both the Vuescan settings (to produce large tif files) and the appropriate PS processing including appropriate sharpening (more than with DSL digital images) to produce professional quality images. We have yet to have an editor say we don't like the image because it looks scanned since we got all of the bells and whistles tuned. - Ann and Rob

Go with Vuescan! Don't bother with Silverfast. It is way over priced. Vuescan does it all for 80 bucks and FREE upgrades FOREVER.

Just going through this. I call BS on the scanner NOT working on Windows 10. The scanner community at large has these scanners working on both 7 and 10, and I am in the midst of proving that to myself.

I do know based on a seller on eBay who services the Nikon Coolscans that running VueScan, which is purported to be better than the Nikon software anyway, will drive that scanner on 7 and 10. I just loaded VueScan and going to run the trial to verify.

The fellow (eBay) also sent me a tweak document which everybody is using to run the Nikon software and change the driver to 64 bit from 32 bit so the Nikon software will run in Windows 7 and 10, which is what the problem is.

The software that came with those scanners is 32 bit... running in XP originally. The tweak makes it 64 bit. Another solution is to run the software in XP 32 bit compatibility mode and then one can run the original software.

I will know about the Vuescan solution, or the tweak by tomorrow as I need to get this scanner (mine is a V ED, the base model for the 5000 ED) Came out with the 5000 Super Coolscan and the 9000. Same time.. during XP.

Putting this scanner on eBay, but I may send it to the eBay seller... his service is right at $100 for the scanner.

The HACK:

To get started download Nikon Scan 4.03 for Windows Vista 32 bit. Install the software on your 64 bit Windows 7 or Windows 8. If you have Vuescan uninstall first. You can reinstall it after the hack is done.

Create a new folder anywhere in your computer. name it "hack files" or something you will remember. Go to start menu, click on "computer", click on "C" drive, then click on the "program files x86" then find "common files", then click on "Nikon", then click on "driver". Go to either "Scan1394" (firewire) or "ScanUSB" (usb files) and find "NKScnUSD.dll". Open file and hit "save as": pick the location (navigate through Computer files to find location of file you created called "hack files"), hit "save".

Now go back to common files/nikon/drivers and find the .inf files in the driver files for your scanner, firewire or USB. Open the "Nks1394.inf" or "NksUSB.inf" depending on your scanner. (You can do both if you want to change Coolscans in the future.) Open the .inf file, erase the contents, replace with newly written 64 bit driver .inf, found in highlight box on this page:

Now hit "save as" and specify again that same hack files folder you put the "NKScnUSD.dll" file in. This .inf file and the .dll are all you need. Hookup Coolscan and turn on, go to control panel, hit "device manager" find "imaging devices" click and it will bring up generic "film scanner" right click on that and you then go to "update driver", hit
"search for location on your computer". browse to your new "hack files" folder and hit enter and it will upgrade the driver to your new 64 bit driver, (offered free from Coolscan friends). Your "hack files" folder has two files in it, or 3 if you do the hack for both types of coolscans. the new .inf file(s) (which are named differently but have same new contents) and the NKScnUSD.dll file. These will now drive all Coolscans, either USB or Firewire.

It's the software that won't run not the scanner. So Vuescan and Silverfast would work but I don't like either of these. I much rather dedicate a WinXP machine for scanning.

I too cast my vote for Vuescan. I have been been using it with my Nikon Coolscan V on Windows 7 for years with excellent results.

Parallels workstation extreme might interest you provided your pc has a cpu supporting vt-d then it can run any version of windows as a virtual machine and it is quite integrated with the host system too. I was able to get my scsi card working with windows 2000 and the nikon software to drive my scanner. This was with Windows 7 64 bit host. If it's usb driven then virtualbox would work as well.
