Hello all

I remember a colleague at work who used a pen tablet and I now give up trying to Photoshop using a mouse. I've been to the Wacom website but even if I select compare, there is little for me to make my decision on. For example, is a 6 X 4 inch going to be big enough? How many sensitivity levels do I need? How much resolution would be adequate?

I realize that I can pixel peep in PS, so I doubt I really need high levels, but I'd love your opinion. At this time I am primarily looking to be able to paint something out of a photo and have difficulty drawing with a mouse. Of course, I may find more uses if you suggest them.

You can go with an intuous pad and watch on your computer screen as the pen works on your image. Or you can go with the small Cintiq screen, which is an actual screen that you work directly on your image. A small 6 x 8 Intuous screen should work just fine.

If you look at the Wacom website, you will find an array of products with the Intuos name. I lean towards the pad due $$.

Had the same dilemma and ended up going with a medium Intuos pad. It's worked well for me.

Same dilemma. I brought a Cintiq because I could use a pen right on the image. Absolutely love it. No regrets. The sticker shock wore off as soon as I began using it.

I bought the one listed below. I love it and it works perfect and comes with full guarantee and all software etc.
Now that I have used this one I am glad I didnt buy a larger one. You have to do too much movement with a larger tablet.

This one ,the 4 buttons in the corner are programmable so if there is a command you use often in PS or any other PGM you can
program those buttons to do that task.

BUT if you have never used a tablet before. Put your mouse in the drawer and force yourself to only use the tablet.
Its tough but by the end of the week you wont miss that mouse at all

OK - Intuos comes in several varieties, draw, art, photo, comic, and 3d with varying sensitivities, resolutions, and sizes. I'm still unable to choose between all those choices.

If you're only using it for photography (e.g., Photoshop), then the Intuos Photo Creative Pen & Touch (small) is a great way to start out. It cost about $99 USD. I have an earlier version, and it's all I need for Photoshop work. Even with the small version, I reduce the pen area to about a quarter of its "working space" to keep hand movement to a minimum. The wireless option is nice, but is an additional cost (~$40).

get the $99 art. small..i size the tablet screen size to top left corner, that way i am not moving all over the screen ,,, more precise..small also takes up less room on your work area....

I bought the small Wacom tablet and it works fine. You don't need the latest and greatest. Mine is a Intus 3 and it still works with Win 10. I bought it from eBay $29 as a refurb.

Glad you posted that reply. I've had an Intuos 3 hidden away in a drawer for years. I've taken it out and will find some some to mess around with it.

I have a Wacom Intuos Pro small tablet and it has worked great for me. I do lots of retouching and I also love to draw. I use Photoshop and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and it works beautifully. Wacom has lots of choices; the small works for me. But if money wasn't an issue, I'd go for a Cintiq. It all boils down on what type of work you do and your budget.

I've been using Intuos tablets for many years. The advice of a photo retouch artist at Photoshop World that I took a couple of classes with was get an "Intuos tablet, medium size. You don't want anything smaller or larger." I've found that advice to have been excellent. I have one in the case with my laptop and another on my desk in my studio. The current model I'm using is an Intuos Pro (model PTH-651). The levels of sensitivity are something that really doen't matter to me. They've increased over the years, but they have all been more than adequate. I use flow and density in LR and Photoshop to control effects when post processing. One warning...once you use one you will absolutely hate retouching a photograph without one. They improve your work, make it easier, and faster.

The Intuos 3 and 4 are no longer made. I get the impression that for photo touch up, any pad will do. Any further comments?
