When you call that number, they try to gain access to your computer so they can steal the info from it. I've had conversations with them - they call me, I don't call the 800 number - and I've discovered it's impossible to insult them. They don't care what you call them, or what you suggest they do to themselves.

The only thing I have found that gets to them is to denigrate their Mother.

I got one of those 'Your Microsoft Windows license has expired' calls this morning telling me that my computer was shut down and I should call this 1-800 number.
The irony was that I was using my computer at the time

I got one of those calls. The guy said that he was from "Weendows" and that I have a problem with my computer. I told him I didn't have a computer. He said, "Yes you do." I said, "No I don't." He again said, "Yes you do." The I told him that he was a scamming SOB. He called me a few colorful names and hung up. The caller ID on those scam calls will usually say "Private Caller" with no number displayed. I don't even answer the call.

Why didn't you just tell him that you have a Mac?

And, if that doesn't work, on a PC just bring up the Task Manager and kill it from there.

I virtually never answer any of the 800 or other similar types of numbers. In fact I usually block them before deleting it off my phone. Now if I was only as effective with scammer emails, there doesn't seem to be such an easy way to deal with them. They don't fool me, but I do find them annoying.

Doesn't your email provider provide a way to report phishing emails, or at the very least a way to report spam email?

Haha, doesn't work. I have a Mac, and they just shift into another gear. One time I told them I didn't have Windows, and they asked what operating system I was using. I told them I had MIL-L-4107 Unix, because that's what all of us at the FBI use. It wasn't a very long phone call.

I once managed to get one mad at me. I told him to please wait while I locate my credit card. I kept him waiting for almost an hour by periodically picking up the phone and telling him I'm still looking, please wait. He got so mad that he called me back for days. I had to block the number.

This has probably done the rounds before, but it's the best advice ever on how to handle internet scams - take it right up to the scammer!

Yes, I always report them as fishing, it's just that they never seem to stop coming!

Last night I got a pop up on this Samsung tablet saying I had a virus in it and I had 4 1/2 min to click on a site or it would shut down permenently. 24 hours later it is still going.
