I would recommend Shutterfly, SmugMug or Flickr. I use Shutterfly and have 5 sites, all FREE. I process my images in Photoshop CC. I also have LightroomCC, Photoshop Elements 10 & 11 and FastStone (friendly and FREE). Windows has Photo Gallery & Mac has Photos, that process digital images.

I suggest you create a site on https://www.shutterfly.com/signup/viewSignup.sfly?fid=fec6b4d0be245b168d3ee00937c23351c04c46206c62d2f0, create one album and upload a few images to give it a trial run. Yes, all software has a learning curve, so be willing to spend a little time learning basics. It is pretty easy. Feel free to PM me for assistance.

How do I set-up an on-line host site to post my photos on for viewing by friends?

1. Host site recommendations
2. Photo size to discourage theft
3. The software needed to reduce a 14 MB RAW file down to a "small", viewable size for storage.
4. Anything else I should know about that I haven't considered?

Thanks in advance!

I use Google Picasa for processing. It works well doing batches of pictures that need the same changes. It can also export files or folders and change the size at the same time.

For pictures I share with family, friends, websites, and social media I use DropBox. You send them a link to the picture folder and they can view/download full size images. For public viewing I export the images to a DropBox folder in reduced size like 640X480 to post the link on websites and social media.

Both do a great job and are free.

Thanks. I will take a look.
I don't know this site, what do you like about it?

Extremely easy to use and free. Also the most free storage capacity of any site that I found reviewed. You create a folder and upload images into it, then just click share and add email(s) of those you wish to share with, and an invitation is sent to them with a link to that particular folder (only). You can have multiple folders and share each to different people. Fast, free, convenient and Google isn't likely to go belly-up any time soon.

I've been using Shutterfly for over 8 years and SmugMug prior to that. I have 5 Shutterfly sites. I share the link via email. I have never had any issue with others viewing the images. I protect the images from uploading or downloading in privacy settings. Easy/peasy to share images. However, I don't use Shutterfly for storage. I do that with dedicated internal data drives, externals and cloud. I do not have a "private group". For the people I send the link to, no login is necessary. The link automatically navigates to the album I'm sharing with them.

I often lecture on architecture on tour programs sponsored by museums and other non-profit organizations. Because I take a lot of photos and carry "big" cameras (what various guests have called a Nikon DSLR with a zoom lens) I often get asked, "When will we get to see your photos." I used to edit my thousands down to a couple of hundred and make a slideshow of the few, which I burned to a disc and sent to the passengers. Increasingly, however, people don't have DVD players, so, for the last two years I have uploaded the images to a private group on Flick'r.

To say that this has been problemmatical is an understatement. Every time at least half the group has problems logging on to Flick'r.

One reason I chose Flick'r was so that passengers could add their photos if they wished. The goal was to create a true photo exchange for those who wanted to participate.

So, does anyone have a suggestion for an alternate site?

#2: For web viewing I do this:
72 dpi
Max size 800 pixels on the longest side
Colorspace: sRGB
#3: Are you sure that you're not trolling? With the number of posts to this group you obviously have been in this for a good while.

Both Google Photos and Flickr are excellent for what you describe - Flickr provides 1 TB of storage at no charge and Google photos allows unlimited uploads of scaled down files at no cost - or full res files on a fee basis (not expensive). In both cases you can save your images into albums and then share those albums with others by sending them a link. Photos can be stored as private or public in each program. There is also an APP for each program that you can have on your iPhone and/or tablet to access your files anywhere and anytime.

But only for images. It doesn't store raw files (or word processing files or emails or program data...) In my opinion, if you want to back up or archive your photos, you should also want to back up or archive all your other important files. However it is pretty good at sharing photos between people with flickr accounts. Not sure about the utility if you don't have a flickr account.

I use PBase also. Anybody can visit and comment on the photos. They disable right clicking on the image to make it more difficult to steal,
and you can designate galleries only open to viewing with a password if you so desire.

Take a look at Zenfolio -- much better and easier to use than SmugMug. I have used both and switched from SmugMug to ZF several years ago because it's easier to use and totally customizable and you can organize your photos any way you like. Also ZF has several different subscription levels, including their top level if you ever want to sell your photos. Feel free to take a look at my ZF website: www.pictoriallyspeaking.com.

As a follow-up to my last post, you can check out Zenfolio at www.zenfolio.com, and you can control downloads however you want. And, if you do end up subscribing, please use this code 3KW-SYG-XWX as a referral, which will give me a discount for my next renewal. Thanks.

Well, @Day.Old, first allow me to make a clarification… DropBox and Google Drive are effectively remote storage options that allow you to share files (of pretty much any type), but they are not really designed to “display” what you store there. Think of them as cloud based floppy disks or thumb drives - where you can stick files for storage and then share them with friends who can view or download what you put up there. From your post it seems to me this is not what you are looking for (despite the title of your post); you seem to want to have a place to which you can upload images and tell your friends to go there to see or perhaps download ones they like. PBase and Flickr are websites that allow you to upload your images for the express purpose of viewing by others, with galleries and so forth - I suggest you look at them to understand the difference. In other words, they are not designed for remote the storage/backup/sharing of any kinds of digital files but instead for the creation of galleries. And there are other similar sites out there.

As for discouraging theft - uploading small sized files (as @CPR mentioned, about 1MB seems reasonable) will at least make it more difficult for someone who downloads the file to make any kind of large print, though not impossible since digital image software has become quite sophisticated. And you might want to consider a watermark on your images (I have them on some of mine - see website in my signature) but got a bit lazy about that - the idea is that if someone were to want to display the image they would have more trouble eliminating the watermark. Maybe.

I hope that clarifies some concepts for you, at least.

Thank you for your explanation of the differences in storage sites. You have caused me to think a bit more in what I want to be able to do. I am not looking for cloud storage for all my shots, but for subsets for specific viewers. I have used FB occasionally, but I want to get smarter about what & where I park things.

I also use smugmug. They coordinate there survices with Godaddy for a domain name that can be used as a convenient way to allow your friends and family to view your photos. Smugmug is easy to add photos to and they provide very good tutorials for your viewing. I recommend smugmug very highly.

Ditto for Zenfolio, and you don't have to use GoDaddy (although I do) for your domain name.
