Trail Cams

I have been looking for a decent trail cam. Every one I have tried I have returned. Pics are either blurry or very dark, just poor quality in general. Even the daylight pics are very inconsistent one good, ten poor.
So, is there a good trail cam out there?
Thanks for responding

Hi Lynxhe,
I use a Bushnell Trophy Cam HD Wireless which I find pretty good.
Not sure what name it is sold under in USA.
Results are very dependant on setting used but with trial an error I get some acceptable results. Hope this helps

Lower your expectations. Trail cams will generally not provide the image quality of even an entry level DSLR. I use Moultrie.

I just bought a Bestok 5210A 12MP this past week, it's probably one of those you've tried and returned. I was surprised at the quality of the daytime photos, they were actually quite good. I had it set for time lapse of 1 photo per minute starting just around sunrise, then stopped it 24 hrs later to take out the sd card and see the results. A few images were severely over or underexposed during the times the light changed drastically, but I would guess about 95% were much better than I expected from this thing. The IR images were OK, haven't have any wildlife visiting the past couple nights so I can't really tell yet how well critters show up at night, but the tree it was pointed at showed up clearly. Video quality is extremely poor, I would only use this camera with still photos. Haven't tried the motion detector mode yet. Not a hunter so this is just for fun to see what happens in my backyard when I'm not there, and this camera is sufficient for that. Under $100 US, takes 4 AA in the camera, and you can add another 4 AA in the mounting base for longer battery life. Very lightweight, mounting strap included. They also have an 8210A model with a 120 degree wide angle lens that's giving me gas pains.

Trail cams are what they are - for doing what they do - but by no means will you ever find one that compares to a DSLR or quality Bridge camera. At least that has been my experience. Have fun making your choice and by all means let us know what you decided.

Maybe a waterproof case for a DSLR?

I'm about to post this review of a Bushnell Trophy Cam Essential which I love:
"The picture quality is outstanding, both colour & monochrome (night). It is easy to set up and performs exactly as one would wish. The instruction book is superb – it is written in ‘real’ English & in a chatty style. It has a battery indicator and the fastening device is one of the best I’ve seen (some of the others can be fiddly).
The only downsides are (1) that there is no USB cable supplied (not a problem for me as I have several from other devices which fit; I asked Bushnell who said: “The product team made the decision to discontinue supplying a USB cable with our cameras because customers were not using them and the accessory added to the cost of the camera. It operates on a standard USB cable”.); (2) the instruction book is unclear on the use of rechargeable batteries (in one section it says “rechargeable batteries can be used but might have a shorter lifespan” – in another it says “rechargeable batteries are not recommended”; Bushnell clarified this for me: “We do not recommend rechargeable batteries“).
This is the best of four trail cameras I’ve had. The first was a Little Acorn which broke after two years (quality was good). The second was a Tech.Bean which performed well for a week but then stopped night recording; I returned it for a prompt refund (Amazon’s returns service really is exemplary!). The third was an Apeman which delivered appalling quality & was returned rapidly. This Bushnell at £128 is well worth the price difference over the other two at around £75/£80 each."

Here is the link for a decent trail cam. I have one and it works well. It is a b&h and on sale for $99.
