Hi all! Great site! I currently have the Nikon 18-140 which I basically keep on my camera. Also have a macro lens, the 70-200 and a 1.4 TC. I've been thinking about purchasing the above and selling the 18-140. What say you?

That is the lens I use all of the time (must be because it is the only lens I have :) I am very happy with the performance. You can go from close-up to distance with just a twist of the wrist and then crop to bring the subject closer. I wish I had been able to afford more 'distance', but for an everyday, multi-scenario lens, it works for me.

If you have an FX (Full size) sensor camera, you should consider the 24-120mm f4.0 for a walk around. You could also use it on your DX camera. When I had a DX camera, I used the 18-300mm as my walkaround. Just FYI.

A decent lens, with the usual compromises for a high zoom ratio.
There are two of them, one smaller with a smaller max aperture at 300mm.

BTW: Per the Nikon web site, the TC does not fit this lens.

I have the 3.5-5.6 18-300G that stays on my camera. I'm satisfied, could it be better? Yes, but I can live with the tradeoffs. You won't be able to use the cameras flash sometimes. You will need another taller mountable flash or a off camera source of light sometimes because of the shadow from the lens.

It is a lot heavier, if it were me, I would opt for a Mint Nikon 18-200 from ebay. You SHOULD go to a camera store and put that 18-300 on your camera and carry it around for a while, if it doesn't bother you, THEN buy it.

Dxomark has tested this lens and gives it a score of 19 (more or less equivalent to 38%).

You are talking a walk around lens. As noted the choice depends on where you are walking and what do you see. If you managed all you photos with Lightroom you have a tool to see what you actually use. You can easily create a histogram of what focal length you actually have used. For example, I used (DX) 10-24 and 18-200 for several years. (Yes, I know it takes at least two more hands than I have to swap those guys in the field!) I found I used the 10-24 almost always at either 10 or 24. But I used the 18-200 all over the map. Furthermore, when I looked at the 200s they weren't my favorite. So I started using the 24-70 f/2.8 instead. But damn it's heavy! And note that on a June day when a snowy owl landed on my garage roof on the south shore of Lake Ontario I was without a tripod and the 18-200 was the longest lens I had with me. I got a decent photo (or 50) for evidence. Much better than nothing! And not sufficient to get a $10K long big aperature lens past the CFO. Good luck. And I hope this wasn't too confusing.

I think you'll find the image quality on the 18-300 is not as good from 18-140 as your lens is, and the performance beyond 140mm is pretty mediocre. I suggest you keep your 18-140..

I keep my 18-200 VR ll on my D7200 almost all the time. I keep my 70-300 3.5-5.6 VR on my D7000 almost all the time when out in the field etc.

If your image quality standards are low enough, it could be considered a fine lens.
