Cathedral Valley is one of the highlights when visiting CRNP. It is not for everyone as a high clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle is recommended for traversing the 58 mile dirt/rock road. Normally takes 6-7 hours to complete the loop and and you have to ford the Fremont River on the west entrance. I took the east entrance part of the loop last week as spring run-off made the river too high to ford. Still it took over an hour to go the 16 miles to the Temple's of Cathedral Valley...the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon.

These Temple's are 400' high sandstone monoliths that are slowly eroding way. At their base, you can see deposits of loose sandstone that has eroded.

A veRy interesting and different park compared to the other well traveled parks in the area--a favorite of mine after only one visit. Did not see this area but glad to know an AWD will work.

Thank you jliane appreciate you stopping by. Be careful if the roads are wet as it is easy to get stuck in the Bentonite gumbo mud. When wet, Bentonite will absorb moisture and can swell up to six times its normal size...as it dries it will shrink back to normal size.
