I'm pondering whether to opt out of cable tv service and going with an hdtv antenna. The options are a scaled-down version of the old roof top, for an attic, or a wall hanging one. Both in the $50. range. I'm in suburban Phila. about 14 miles from several sources. My attic is 18' +/- of the ground. Any experience out there? Thanks in advance, Mike

I went with an outside ant. New digital channels keep popping up and I want as many as I can get.

I have an HD antenna and never had a problem with reception, I just pointed it out my window inside the house, I live about 50 miles outside of Houston and it works great.

A Roku box for 80 bucks and a netflex subscription for 10 bucks. I cut the cord, put a $30.00 antenna in the attic, it works fine to get local news etc. I'm saving around $80.00 per month and that is used to help solve my GAS problem.

Yes. I believe they have four different size/models. Get one of the larger/fancier models for your main TV and save some money with one of their smaller ones for your second TV.

Before you do anything, consult someone in the business. Digital delivery is not like analog was and can experience multiple problems. Also, the slightest move of the placement can make a big difference in what you receive and cannot receive. Channel master's web site and people can be helpful here too. They also have a DVR that you can use to record shows when not around (or when you just want to skip through the adds). Learn what you are doing before you leap or you could end up buying twice. Over the air HD signals are far superior to Cables HD or the little dishes HD; you will be pleasantly surprised and when you do break the cord, you will wonder you didn't do it years ago.

We got rid of Dish 10 years ago. A chimney mounted antenna brings in live TV, a Mac mini gives internet, Hulu+,Netscape and AmazonPrime. It would be different if I was a "sports addict".

What suburb of Philly? I lived at Welsh and the Boulevard and could receive OK - are you closer to Roxborough than I was?

I have thought of "cord cutting" also but we still have a landline we use in addition to the cell phones, plus we need internet, plus we like shows on the premium channels like HBO and Showtime, plus other HD channels that I don't think are over the air, like HGTV, Military Channel, History, etc. Even if we used a streaming device, I think our total bill would be close to the same as from Spectrum Cable, used to be Bright House Network, used to be TimeWarner. I'd love a better, cheaper solution!

I do have a roku but seldom use it. Last month I canceled Netflix because it had been over a month since I had watched a movie. I pay $72 for land line and internet. I have friends who pay that and another hundred to have cable and are in the same income class as I am. I live in the woods in Arkansas and still have 30 channels with my ouside ant. 7 channels of public TV with some duplication . There is a lot on roku but most are plagued with comercials. Quite a few roku channels have repeated commercials too
Over and over and over.

I use the rooftop antenna on my RV for "over the Air broadcast".

Excellent or better, as long as pointed at a source. The benefit is that I can change the direction depending on how my RV is situated.

Presuming you are not driving your house around, roof top should be good for you. My RV antenna folds up about 4 feet from the roof and can be rotated by a lever in the RV.

My near by relatives all have dish, but I get as good reception on the available over the air channel as they get on their channels provided by dish. I pay nothing.

Thanks everyone for your responses. The outdoor antenna looks like the ticket but I'm wondering whether the attic version would be a reasonable alternative since the outdoor setup is a bit more labor.
