These were shot Sept. 25, 2012. The elk were in rut and bugling constantly and they were everywhere.

These were taken with a Pentax K-5 and a Pentax 300mm F4. The first two are heavily cropped. The park was doing flora rehab in the area and didn't want people to walk past the shoulder of the road. There were 40-50 people doing the same thing as we. I took 100 pictures plus of these battling elk and all of them are pretty good except when they got behind the trees.

Piika are very hard to phograph. I usually end up with a bunch of pictures of rocks.

I know what you mean. I was taking pictures of the bighorn when I happened to see movement close to me out of the corner of my eye. I was very lucky.

Thank you. My sister said I should sell that one to the Hartford Insurance Company.

Very nice, especially of the Big Horn, which I've never seen up close.

Very often one can meet up with a small herd of elk in downtown Estes Park too.

The big horn sheep aren't easy to get a good picture of either! You did good. I love that Pentax 300 mm lens! It's my favorite lens- never lets me down. Can search a bit for focus but when it locks on it is spot on! Beautiful area. I lived in Colorado Springs for 25 years and got up to RMNP many times. Enjoyed your images.

Agree on the 300mm. I think it's focus improved on the K-3.

And thank you.

I really enjoyed the photos. The elk are great and something I will never get to see in person. One of the reasons I like the forum so much, there are such great photos of people, places and things that I've never seen up close and personal.
