i'm thinking more of a token percentage, after so many sales, so if the book remains a vanity, then no hard feelings, but if it is really popular, then i get some compensation.

I would usually get anything from £5 to £200 for books, papers or magazines, depending upon how wide a publication it is.

A small local book, I would be thinking a small amount as Perry suggests, around $25 plus of course having your name which helps next time. Personally, I would be happy enough with $10 for a local book and a friend. I agree with not taking a %, just too complicated for your friend. If there is a re-print, you could ask for another payment. I have been published in books that have had a number of re-prints, each time, I get paid.
Good luck

A friend is writing a book about our area. My photo project has been to (slowly) take pix of local oddities & objects of interest. We got together yesterday to do something totally unrelated & we each happened to mention what we are working on. I suggested that she use some of my images & she was excited to do so. I then said I would need a contract agreement. But I have no idea what might be reasonable compensation. $50/image plus a small % ? Anyone have experience with this?

This could be free advertising for you. Make sure your name is under any and all photo's. Like, photo by Joe Smith under the photo. Charge her like $50.00 for all. You will make out in the long run.

Quite frankly I can't imagine charging a friend anything for four or five photos that I had taken anyway as part of my photographic hobby. Credit in the book would be sufficient.

good point about the % complication, Alpix! There is no way of knowing how good the book will be, or how well it will sell. So if i focus on how large the print run will be, it will all be easier for both of us.

Everyone must do what is right for them, but I would keep it simple.
There is never going to be much money in this, which is fine.
Print runs are often measured in the 10k volume +, which I doubt a local book would achieve anything near.
If I played my guitar for fun, and a friend asked me to play in his pub, I would expect a few pints for my efforts.

Personally I would not get too hung up on the amount, the kudos and addition to your photographic portfolio is far more valuable at this stage, if you want to start makeing some money from your hobby.
Perhaps you could start by asking what she is expecting to pay? Are you expecting any payment before the book goes to print?
Well done and good luck!

For a friend, breakfast would be enough for a small number of prints(5-10). And each reprint would also be a breakfast. With the friend, of course

I did a book cover for a good friend of mine and I was very happy to receive a nice credit in the forward portion of the book.

Years ago I did photos of a friend's pottery collection for a book. We agreed on a nominal price, I received credit in the book for the photos. It has had 4 or 5 printings over the years and we are still friends. I could have demanded compensation for subsequent printings, but I didn't put in any more time or work. I got several free copies of the book. Sometimes friendship is more important than excessive compensation.

There are two arrangements:

1. Flat fee which is mutually agreed upon. There is no set fee - PERIOD

2. Shared costs and shared royalty of a 50/50 split. In short, both take the risk and both equally share in the profits. If self published just drop the word royalty. In this arrangement your name goes on the cover.

Former publisher for 3 major companies.

#2 is an interesting idea, ole sarg. since my pix are applicable to only one section out of many, i don't think the 50/50 idea would be acceptable to her. but i'll keep it in mind. Maybe a variation of it would work well. She doesn't have much in the way of money resources. I'll need to find out what arrangement her publisher is expecting.

Possibly something to consider is: If your friend uses your photos in the book, let's say 5 of them. What is the status of your photos after that. Is the friend buying the photos forever, will you still retain ownership if you choose to make some 16X20 prints later and sell them due to the popularity of the book? I honestly have no idea what the answers are but from reading past posts here on UHH I believe the actual ownership of the rights to the photo can sometimes come into question. What if your friend claimed ownership because the photos were bought and paid for and the friend wanted to start selling prints. Would that be acceptable to you?

As to your specific question I like the idea of my name under each photo with credit given in the front of the book.

Dennis
