I want to purchase a 50mm f1.8 auto focus lens for my D3300. Should I choose a 35mm FX lens or a 50mm DX lens?
The DX unless you plan to go to an FX body in the near future. The DX is lighter and a lot less expensive.
you have two questions:
1) do you want a limited but possibly optimised for a small sensor DX lens or a full frame lens for possible use on a full frame camera later?
2) Do you want a 35mm view angle or a 50mm field of view?
I want the 50mm field of view.
Then a DX lens is what you want. The FX 50mm is supposed to be similar to an 85mm on a DX body.
I looked on Nikon's website. I could not find a 50mm DX lens listed. Plenty of FX options, but no DX choices.

50mm is 50mm.... period! DX or FX it is still 50mm and field of view is dependent on the size of the sensor.... so either a DX or a FX 50mm will have the same field of view on the same camera.

Either a DX or a FX 50mm will have the exact same field of view on a DX body. a 50mm on a DX body will have. A Nikon DX has a crop factor of approx 1.5 so either 50mm will have an "effective" 75mm focal length.
If you want a close to a 50mm (1:1) image at a 35mm equivalent go with a 35mm lens. A 50mm DX and FX will give you the same results on your camera it's just you won't be using all of the capabilities of the FX lens as the camera will crop out a portion of the incoming image. In other words you don't use all the glass available on an FX lens and that's why the DX lenses are lighter and less expensive. There's just less glass.

There is no 50mm 1.8 DX lens. 50mm 1.8G is FX. If does not say DX it means it is FX which will work on your D3300. You need AF-S model, not AF-D which will not auto focus on your camera.
