My inhaler is $1030 a month - my share of cost ... $336. I was advised to go to the manufacturer's website and see if they had a coupon I could download. I did. They did. My cost is now $10 a month for 12 months. Now explain that to me ...

With regard to CEO salaries--You gotta ask 1 question- Whats anything worth? Answer--what someone is willing to pay. Why is a house on the beach worth 1 million when a house across the street is worth 1/2 that.? same answer. We just sold a painting form an artist from the late 1600's for $3,100. A rembrandant done at the same time woukld go for $30 million. :Yes it's not fair that the CEO makes X while an average worker makes Y. But who is to set the prices. I don't want to have the government make those kinds of decisions. The thing is that average workers are easy to find while good CEO's are rare. For a while I was an independant contractor. If I didn't perform I didn't eat. I believe that a CEO"s income should be based, in part, on the profitability of the company. Why is Tom Brady worth 30 million a year> becuse managment thinks he's worth it. Nobody ever said that life is fair.

It is people like you who are part of the greed and corruption that goes on in medicine! One of the solutions would be to educate more doctors who are in the profession for the love of curing instead of enriching themselves --- we need a NEW BREED of doctors and many more as time goes by. The supply is being closely regulated by the medical unions!

There are lots of "reasons" for these high prices. "Capitalism" "Free Enterprise" "Research" "Profit" Of course the main reasons are greed and political corruption. How can a CEO justify a salary of $20 - $40 million a year, especially when many people can't afford their products?

Why aren't the lawyers being blamed? I see commercials ad nauseum if you took, used, thought about or someone you don't know thought about x product we have a lawsuit against it and we will cash in and give you a few bucks for the reference.

Sometimes the board members want the CEO to take more ma be that would justify the board getting more.

On Jerry's point I'm very conservative especially when it comes to business but this is one point that I really think should be addressed. I don't think any CEO should make more than 50X's the average workers salary. In some cases it's over 500X's and that's just plain greed. It has always amazed me that the stock holders in these companies allow this.

And I would add that "no sports figure and no motion picture or Television person should make more than 50 times what a member of their audience makes."

Don't let the insurance Companies off the hook. They know that no one watches the purse strings very close until its too late, so let the medical profession and the pharmaceutical companies charge what ever they like because they will just keep raising you premiums and laugh all the way to the bank!

The OP and subsequent replies show that people are beginning to understand the root causes of our very high priced health care. To enrich your understandings I woukd recommend a reading of T.R. Reid's two books Healing America, 2007 @ 2010 editions (the latter updates the former). Therein you will discover how other countries took 'profit' out of health care in a way consistent with their values. Great Britain - government runs all. German, France, Switzerland, Japan - insurance based. How many health insurance companies in the US - half a dozen or so; how many in Germany - over 100. How can so many non-profits exist in Germany - everyone gets a living wage, non get vast salaries.

The main reason we have our system is our sense of values. Until that changes do not expect affordable health care. You wonder why the ACA did not solve the main problems. Well, check Steven Brill's "Americas Bitter Pill."

My wife uses Advair. We winter in Yuma, AZ. She buys her Advair in Los Algodones, MX for $58.00 for two packages a two month supply. The Advair is made in the US or the UK by GlaxoSmithKline. We (the U.S. pay for the whole world.) It is called theft.

We had a discussion the other day about drug pricing. Yesterday I was exploring a few things and found some tidbits to share:

1) The Advair inhaler lost its patent almost a year ago - the medication combination lost its patent even before the disc inhaler mechanism did. At this point no company is stepping up to offer a generic - there is a lot of pressure to avoid this. Why?
Advair Inhaler: $377 (250/50 strength, One month's worth!)
Symbicort Inhaler: $325
Breo Inhaler: $338 (Prices from GoodRx.com - may vary from zip code to zip code)

However, in Canada companies cannot maintain their patent quite as long and generics are encouraged:
Advair 250/50 brand: $120
Advair Generic $ 60

So why are we - and Medicare going broke?

2) Viagra - AKA sildenafil:
TEN 100mg tablet: $560
TWELVE 100mg tablets in Canada: $159
SIXTEEN generics in Canada: $115

However - sildenafil was first patented to treat pulmonary hypertension ( a form of heart disease). THIS patent expired in 2012, and sildenafil IS available as a generic in the US.

You didn't KNOW that, did you??!! Very few doctors know this!

However - if your doctor prescribes Viagra or sildenafil 50mg or 100mg, it is only available as the brand name at the price shown above - over $50 per 100mg. Sildenafil 20 mg, however, IS available as a generic.

SO - if your doctor writes you a prescription for Sildenafil 20mg Take 5 tablets when needed for sexual activity, then 90 tablets (equal to 18 doses of Viagra) will only cost you - $170 from Walmart, and if you print off a CVS coupon from GoodRx.com, you can get it for $60!

So - go figure!

Agreed. Also, folks on this blog tend to forget there is a shortage of doctors here.

Yup, I found the same thing with a blood thinner I take. In Canada: $75Cdn for a three month supply. In the USA: $750US for a three month supply. Total ripoff!!

You are right---- this shortage is pre-planned so that the medical profession can continue gouging the public. There are MANY students who would like to become doctors! But our educational system is not functioning in a healthy manner,i.e. encouraging students to take up medical professions for example. The hurdles are discouraging, the time required to become a doctor is discouraging…with education helpers such as videos, etc. we could teach skills and concepts much faster than the 7 or 8 years required to become a doctor! Medically, we are still in the horse and buggy age!! The present doctors had to go through a lot of hardship, expense and time to become a doctor - isn't there a better way??? Other countries are doing much better than us -- why?? Our values? What the ----

Something is wrong with the system perhaps we need a single payer system with an entire revamping of our medical system. I would be interested in mandatory medicare for all with negotiated medicine and medical costs. Right now, I pay +$5000/year for medicare, drug insurance and a supplemental policy. My wife is retired and not eligible for medicare at this time and Cobras about $15,000/year. Insurance companies have controlled our medical issures for decades, could we use a real concerted effort to try and fix it.

If tax dollars are spent on medical, I would like to see our tax dollars spent on schooling for med students (with a X year commitment to various areas of the country) AND to set up federal government malpractice insurance.
