This is what Nikon expert, Ken Rockwell recommends. I went through all of my Picture Controls and increased sharpness to level 6. I shoot RAW though and use unsharp mask in post processing.

Don't all your photos look like a cartoon , like Rockwell as he has cranked to the limit, a little is ok but he goes to extremes.

If you shoot raw, the picture controls have NO EFFECT on what is captured. If you use a non-Nikon raw processor, like Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw to process your shots, picture controls have no effect on your image.

Actually, let me rephrase what I said above - Picture controls have NO EFFECT on what is captured, they only effect the JPG output of the camera.

Ken Rockwell likes basic JPG as output, and too often his shots to me look overly processed by his extreme settings - they suit him and thats all that matters, nothing wrong with that.

Go to Photo shooting menu toggle to Set Picture Control. press OK, first on the list is Standard, with this highlighted Right Toggle, now toggle down to Sharpening, second on the list, now right toggle too 6 and press OK. Sharpening to 9 will over sharpen and make photos look soft as well. Hope this helps.

I was just in the process of printing out the focusing chart and ran out of ink!! Guess I'll be making a trip to Best Buy.

That's a real nuisance. I now have just two models, a Canon iP4500 - three of them, and an HP C5280. I makes it much simpler to keep ink on hand for just two models. I shop around for name brand ink, often finding bargains on ebay. I always get the high capacity cartridges. I hate driving into town, especially for one item (about an hour round-trip). That's why I like Amazon.

This is what your friend was probably talking about ... Go to MENU SETUP > Select AF FINE TUNE. This adjustment allows you to make small adjustments in the focusing of the camera. Nikon recommends that this adjustment be used "... only when required". GOOGLE "AF FINE TUNE" for a more detailed explanation.

DISREGARD this response, it deals with a different adjustment.

It's hard to be critical of a capture without the essential information along with it. I don't think they look like cartoons per se but I did notice the wingtips in the bottom capture that I looked at closely were out of focus or motion blurred. Having the capture details could help determine if this was the result of DOF, shutter, etc. But this is the perfect example to show that it doesn't much matter what the in camera sharpening is set to if the rest of the exposure isn't quite right.

I don't know what it was, but this guy has 4 posts in 4 months and they are all unintelligible. No idea what his problem is. Maybe drugs, or booze, or just not a single clue.

He makes it clear, but only if you know what he's talking about , I can follow him but if I didn't know how to before I read this it would tough, ,I never read manual ,it has not been used since I bought them 10 years ,, I can get around to the things I need, and a lot of the stuff it can do does not interest me, like making ones head all contorted , etc but setting thathave to do picture out come, no problem , and i am photo self taught , every thing that I learned comes from books , and time life photography series , monthly photo mags , and taking lots of images

What has this to do with the OP's question?

My apologies - you are correct, I was responding to the 'out of focus' comment - on mine. that was solved by a full reset.

Yes, or shoot raw and manage sharpness on the big computer screen instead of process it in the little computer in camera.

Now, I shoot a D7100, but assume the D7200 has the same menu for Picture Control Settings.

If you are a jpegger, then you go into the menu, select picture control and when you hit OK it will list the various grouping - Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape - if you click OK it selects it as the set control, if you click the right arrow (ride side of thumbwheel) it will go into the settings for the selected picture control setting and allow you to fine tune all of the settings. If you shoot raw, they just don't matter as no processing is done in camera.
Yes, or shoot raw and manage sharpness on the big ... (show quote)

If you shoot RAW and don't want any sharpening done in the jpeg you see when you open the file in Nikon software you have to make sure sharpness in picture control is set to zero. Personally I leave it set to a modest 2 or 3 and then continue sharpening from there in PP. I'm not sure how this works in Lightroom.

Shooting raw and using Lightroom, the in camera settings for picture control are ignored, Lightroom does add a bit of sharpening automatically though, based on the camera profile, and is fully adjustable up or down within Lightroom while editing.

Maybe English is a second language for him? Based on his post I certainly hope so.
