Being an old AE-1 shooter myself, I understand your comfort with Canons. Can I suggest, considering your price range, that you take a look at the Canon SX60?
[color=blue]I enjoyed a trip to your 500px pages and you have some very impressive images and I can't help but envy your location. I need to make a point before others from Colorado happen to wander across my comments and question my sanity about a scarcity of birds here - it is just that, for whatever the reason, there are very few birds come to this area where I live and by most standards the area might well qualify to be a bird sanctuary with all the mature trees and small ponds. I think the thing is that there was no effort made to plant any fruit or nut producing plants so there's not much to offer here but water and a lot of places to perch. Good luck with your bird hunting.

starting anew, please pardon me for hijacking your thread. I wouldn't have done that had I not perceived that the thread had all but run its course along with a perception on my part that I might be offering something that could be of benefit to you and others interested in the subject of your thread. Please rest assured that I won't do this to your future threads. I've just done something similar to another persons thread and I'm not feeling real good about that one either. I guess I just need to be quiet.

Thank you for the compliment!
In your latest post, you apologized for "hijacking" the thread. I don't think you hijacked it, perhaps deviated a bit! But your entries have been friendly, enjoyable, and informative. Believe me, the true hijackers are those who not only diverge, but won't stop. And it is not always pretty...

I absolutely concur. This is a discussion forum, and discussions have a life of their own. Gene's contributions were in my estimation some of the best 'diversions' that I have seen, which added significant value. I did backtrack to some of the other threads alluded to, and it seemed that some of the people that objected to Gene's posts have a little bit of a track record for being objectionable.

Peter, you may be too gentle with the word "objectionable"! It can get interesting when people have a productive conversation, but when it gets competitive or downright snarky... another story altogether.

We Brits have a reputation for understating things..., perhaps the word 'deplorable' would have been more appropriate and also more controversial!

That doesn't necessarily mean that we are being nice! It is possible to insult some people and they don't even realize that they have been insulted!
"Once, the ability to come up with a clever insult that could be repeated in polite society was thought an important, if not necessarily essential, component of being a gentleman."

I have heard that "being a gentleman" is very important to many Brits! Now I understand why... (The art of the insult!) Having a good vocabulary is certainly a valuable tool to have at your disposal.

No I didn't say the OP. I said Kate Middleton.
Ahh...now I get it.
I guess that was a bit of a joke.
I would suggest looking at an older model Canon semi-pro DSLR such as the 7D. A quick hunt on Amazon turned one up for about $650 and even though it is old, it's a great camera with a ton of features and it's built like a tank and weather resistant to boot. I once drowned mine, let it dry overnight, and as good as new the next day.
And, like all the others, my condolences for your sudden loss. I recently lost my father (though not suddenly) and am very pleased to see that my mother is now picking up her old hobbies of music and painting. I need to get back into my photography after a year of family care-taking myself.
