Computer question about NEF files.

at one time when I went into the directory I got a thumbnail of each file.
Now I get thumbnails of TIFF and JPG files and sometimes just a few NEF but never all of them. ( i just get the little blue box showing)
I wish we had a delete button , I got the answer the Nikon Codec must have been corrupted, I reloaded the CODEC and its working now.....
I never had these problems with XP just win 10 IM constantly having problems.

Perhaps your computer is running bit slow. How long do you wait?
Don't forget, NEF files are a lot larger than most other file formats.
Right click on a NEF file and choose "Open With," select "Choose another App," and select Photos. Make sure you check the "Always Use" check box.

The OP is talking about thumbnails.
Do you have more than one camera? The reason I ask is with my Windows 8 Pictures folders, I can see thumbnails of cr2 (Canon raw) files from my T3i and sx50, but not the newer sx60.
I have had the computer offline for many months, though. It sounds like you're keeping yours updated. If you see some NEF thumbnails, but not all, within a single folder, I agree that possibly there just hasn't been time for all of them to display. Is it always the same ones that don't, or random?

Since we are talking NEF, did you download the Window NEF codec from Nikon? It allow Windows to ALWAYS display both thumbnails and the full image in any of the viewers including on the desktop.

Codecs are like any software title . . . . they must be updated from time to time, although not as often. They are simply instruction sets that tell the operating system how to render an image from the file in question. They exist for NEFs, CR2s, DNG, and so on. There's a company that creates a product named FastPictureViewer, and it is a collection of codecs that will display any image file using tools in Windows. I've used it successfully for several years. Might want to check it out.

NIKON is responsible for the CODEC, NOT Microsoft.
If the Nikon CODEC is not working you need to be complaining about Nikon. Blaming Microsoft for a Nikon CODEC not working is like blaming your toaster because your bakery sold you moldy bread.

Do yourself a favor and spend $10 for the FastPictureViewer codec.... it works with everything!
