In Ken Rockwell's review of the Sony 7AR II I came across these comments:
"The problem with this Sony is... its images don't look as uniformly superb as what I get from my Canon or Nikon DSLRs right out of the camera."
In the next paragraph he writes "while A7RII images look great, its colors never look as great in real-world shots I get
directly from my Canons and Nikons.
As I Sony owner of the a6300 who has considered the Sony 7ARII I'm wondering what opinions are out there on the UHH on Rockwell's opinion.

When dealing with JPG images it more the cameras processing that determines colors than the sensor. Comparing Raw images will less difference.
Oh and Rockwell? Well believe what opinions of his you wish, they are constantly contradictory.

The difference is probably a combination of personal preferences and software, not hardware. I believe Nikon uses Sony sensors. Is Rockwell comparing JPEG images? Does he prefer bright or subdued colors? Does he prefer sharp or painterly images? Is he basing his opinion only on images of palm trees? I use both Nikon and Sony cameras. I shoot RAW, not JPEG. I have used both Lightroom and Capture One to process my RAW images. There are significant differences in the interpretations of RAW files from these two programs. With regard to Sony files, Capture One renders my images beautifully with little need for further adjustment. Lightroom images need much more adjustment on my part to achieve what is, in my opinion, a correct rendering.

KR makes a big issue of coloring - after all, he has to find SOMETHING in his reviews to whine about and stir up controversy so people will come to his site !

For most of us - me included, this is mostly theoretical minutusia - as changing coloring is certainly within the realm of post processing - and certainly VERY subjective ! While coloring can be very important in some very artistic genres and applications, for most of us - not so much.

What makes KR the expert? I sense from his reviews he is very biased...not rational!

As I recall he's saying he shoots in JPEG and cranks the colors way up (in Sony I think he's in vivid). He considers really cranking up the colors an important part of his artistic approach.
Great to have someone with both Nikon and Sony weigh in.
I had been just shooting in raw but have been working recently with JPEG's and using vivid but not cranked up the way he talks about it. Too me to crank it up all the way (to +3 in saturation) makes the photo look unnatural.

But KR is a "PRO" and does not have time for PP ......?

Sony has always had a different way of displaying colors. Their CRT monitors and early flat screens were the same way.

Sounds like it. He also wrote this in his review of the 7ARII: "Raw shooters are a different breed... but for those of us who need our cameras to deliver perfect images directly from camera with no need for external processing, the Sony never really excels.

The truth is, the images these cameras produce will be very similar, and the lens will have more impact on the image than the camera itself. Show me a random image, and without looking at the EXIF data, I cannot tell if a Sony, Canon or Nikon camera was used to generate it. In a blind test, I don't think anyone truly can.

KR shoots in jpg ONLY, and they won't have the same coloration as a Nikon/Canon image will have but the board flattens out when one shoots in RAW. I've seen KR contradict himself several times and like any other online reviewer, one has to give and take what they say.

The only thing good out of Ken Rockwell's mouth is hot air. Well, not really, but he is opinionated. I find I get more out of his lens reviews than his camera reviews.

His OPINION. Sony lenses use Minolta glass, Minolta glass has it's own character, it is different from Nikon and Canon and under the right lighting conditions it is quite pleasing. But it is different.

Google images of the Sonya7RII and see for yourself. The images are awesome and you can crop in as far as you want and still have an awesome image. You can use a wide variety of lenses on the sony with an adapter. Rent one and try it first if you want. Im sure you would be pleased.

Read Rockwell---but don't be overly disturbed by anything he says.
