Where can I get microphones and headphones that fit d7200. I've shot stills for 71 years, but I'm new to video.

I'd search the online camera stores, Amazon and ebay. Most any head sets will work; you just need to be sure you have the right connectors or adapters. A separate microphone is essential to avoid camera nose. Look for directional mikes with a rubber vibration mount that goes into flash shoe. The mike is where "you get what you pay for". Rhode is one brand that has decent quality. There are many others. Google and youtube are your friends; search for microphones for use with cameras.

I've shot stills for 60 years and video for 6.

Headphones are easy. Anything that plugs into a phone, old walkman, etc. with 1/8th inch or 3.5mm male plug will work. They can be big "over the ear" style or little "in the ear" style.

What are you trying to shoot? It makes a difference with mics.

And the embroidery dances or sings?

Your first question is about mics and headphones. What is it about embroidery that needs an audio track? Is the embroiderer speaking? How far away is the camera?

Hi rf22k,

I'm assuming you want to shoot some type of "instructional" video of embroidery. I've been shooting "instructional, how-to" videos since the late 80s and good audio is a very important part any quality video. Another poster already mentioned the 1/8" plug for earphones and you'll need a 1/8" plug on your microphone as well. I've found a lavalier microphone to be the best option and use both wired-with-a-cord and radio controled. To start, I recommend getting a 15' to 25' "cord type" lavalier microphone like this one on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audio-Technica-ATR-3350i-Omnidirectional-Condenser-Lavalier-Microphone-/331692799582?hash=item4d3a6e765e:g:czkAAOSwYHxWL43~). It's not the most expensive mic, but you'll find it should produce fairly clean audio. You'll also find them available at electronic's store like Comp USA or Best Buy. Take care & ...

Al,

I bought the same one from B&H. It works well with my cameras. The price is the same, but the one B&H sells has an adapter that allows you to use a smart phone as a voice recorder.

Another mic that is fun to use is a Sony bluetooth wireless. Unfortunately the price is higher! But, compared to other wireless mics, the price at $160 is not bad. The frequency range is limited so it would not be great for shooting where musical instruments are involved, but narration works well.

I was lucky - I found a used Nikon ME-1 microphone at B and H for a good price. When I received it, it looked to be brand new - still wrapped up and with warranty card. Keep in mind that your DSLR is designed to record audio in stereo - some of the aftermarket devices are monaural. If you have the need to record outdoors, you will appreciate the low filter to reduce wind noise.

For headphones, any pair of stereo headphones with a 1/8th inch (3.5mm) plug will work just fine. I have a $5.00 pair from Big Lots. Only problem is that I forget to take them with me when I leave the house.
