I don't know anything at all about the other alternatives he discusses, but my experience with gimp is completely different from what he reports; it is now essentially the only one I use.
There are far more than just 4 alternatives to Photoshop, this How to Geek post is very far from a comprehensive list, there are many more alternatives which are far superior to the four recommended in this list.

john, can you give us suggestions?
What do you use if not one of the ones jerry listed?
Thanks
Dave
Thought I would try Gimp but McAfee gives a security warning for the Gimp site and warns of potential problems with the download.
Have you experienced any problems? Also, when I tried to install the publisher was not Gimp but a rather odd name.
Thanks.

So you have used each of the 4 and know first hand that there are better ones. Please give examples. Affinity is awesome, especially for $50, I got it for $40.
I've long wanted a good alternative to PS. First, I hate Adobe. Their customer service is terrible and I don't like having to rent my software. I don't like being at the mercy of a company that can (and has promised to) raise the price at any time.
I have used Corel PSP for years, but never got used to it--maybe didn't give it enough effort. When Affinity Photo came out for Windows, I jumped and have mostly fallen in love.
I was in the middle of preparing for a show, so I kept using PS for this project, but now I'm going to focus on Affinity and try to learn all the ins and outs. So far it does everything I want. It handles color channels more effortlessly than PS but I'll be learning.
Unfortunately, my PS contract renewed automatically in December, so it looks like I'm on the hook for another year even if I never use it. I've been told that you can't quit.
I would add to the list of great photo editing tools that are not PS...Capture One and Zoner Photo Studio.
I thought it was strange that the how to geek author made no mention whatsoever of Photoshop Elements. Even though Elements has the photoshop name there is much different about it, one being that it isn't a subscription.

Adobe also claims the copyright to any photo you edit in PS, can sue you for speaking out against them on public forums and can use your bank account in perpetuity however they see fit.

There are a number of places which distribute "open source" software. No one is allowed to make money directly this way, but some find a way to gain from providing the software, and these are the ones that seem to be easiest for a search engine to find, much easier than the official ones are - many of them seem to download a bunch of junk you didn't ask for and probably don't want.
I believe this is the official site
