For a good complement to Apple Photos, Affinity Photo is cheap (<$50 in the App Store) and slick. The Windows version is the same.

I use Canon Digital Photo Professional for difficult Canon images. The Windows version is the same.

I use SilkyPix Developer Studio SE for my Panasonic GH4 images. The Windows version is the same.

I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC (subscription) for serious workflow. The Windows version is the same.

I use Thorsten Lemke's excellent Graphic Converter ($40 shareware, Mac ONLY) to batch manipulate images and convert to unusual formats. It also has a WONDERFUL slide show/slide sorter feature that is great for full screen editing of group photos.

What editing program do you recommend for a Mac

Thanks

I've spent many years with Photoshop. Mac users have had a superior software available for over a year, Affinity Photo. In the last couple months it has been rewritten for Windows and I am learning to use it. I intend to abandon PS as Affinity does every bit as good a job, but easier and has a couple other tricks.

SilkyPix Developer Studio SE comes with better LUMIX Micro 4/3 cameras. Your wife may have the disk with her manuals.

iPhoto is defunct. The last few versions of OSX and MacOS Sierra won't run it. It was replaced by Photos.

Believe it or not there are other, and less expensive, programs than Adobe products (Lightroom, Photoshop). Before spending your money, do yourself a favor and look into Macphun---it won't cost you anything to look and you might be surprised at how good their their programs are.
The Macphun Creative Kit includes the programs Focus, FX Photo Studio, Intensify, Noiseless, Tonality, and Snapheal. They can be bought together in the kit or individually. Macphun also offers Aurora HDR and Luminar. Luminar is the program I use the most.
Another good program for Macs is Affinity Photo.
The Macphun programs and Affinity Photo can be used as extensions in Photos for OS or as stand alone.
I am not saying that Adobe product are not good, they are great, but they are also expensive. Adobe Creative Cloud runs $10 a month, that's $120 a year, year after year. With Macphun and Affinity Photo you pay once and updates are free.
Macphun and Affinity are easy to learn and to use. If you use the "Search" function to look up Lightroom or Photoshop you will find an amazing number of post outlining problems with those programs. If you do the same with Macphun and Affinity you will very few.
Also, Macphun and Affinity Photo offer a large number of outstanding tutorials that are free on their web sites.

I'm going to take that tour as well. Lightroom and Photoshop are causing me to rip out my spleen. I'm simply not smart enough, or too old, or both.

Also look at DxO. Not as complicated as photoshop.

And better at some things. It's expensive but when I consider how much I have spent on cameras and lenses, it's a drop in the bucket. Sadly, it does not yets have the modules for my A99II.
