This August I will be in the shadow of the annular eclipse. I have read that with a total eclipse you don't need a solar filter during the totality of the eclipse, is this true also with an annular eclipse? Is a ND filter sufficiant? The sheets of solar filter paper seem cheaper than a screw on, is there a way to make that work? Thanks.

During an annular eclipse, part of the sun's surface is always visible so you need the same filtering that you would use when photographing the surface of the sun. BE SURE TO PROTECT YOUR EYES TOO!

For sunspots, I typically use a 9-stop ND filter at a minimum, and maybe a 3-stop stacked with that. Since an eclipse would block out most of the sun, you may be able to get away with lower values like 2- or 3-stop, but you'll just have to experiment during the eclipse.

It's an annular eclipse not a lunar. Part of the sun will be exposed since it's not a total eclipse.

I use "Baader Astrosolar" safety film. A 8x11 inch or so does not cost a whole lot of money and you will have enough material to make several filters for your camera, binoculars and eclipse viewing glasses.

Go to a welding supply store, buy a 4"x 4" number 10 glass [not plastic] welding lens. The higher the number the darker the lens ,so a 11 is darker than a 10. There is a dark green and a gold plated lens, buy both, they do not cost a lot. Hold, tape, the plate over your lens and take some practice shots. I have taken sun shots doing exactly what I have written, the shots came out great. As a retired welder, I have watched more than one eclipse behind a welding hood.

Thanks for the tip, I have an 11, I've heard if you use a welding shield it should be at least 14, is this not true?

I use Thousand Oaks solar filter ($59) to safely shoot the SUN, and eclipse thereof. Made this last Thursday. Nikon D500, 500mm lens f4 with 1.4X.

Wait...is this a total eclipse, with corona, across mid America, or an annular eclipse with a ring of unobstructed sunlight at the periphery?

In parts of America, it is TOTAL! That's why many people are so excited. There is another one in a few years then nothing for a long time. Maybe not so long for some but I sure would be around to see it!

As mentioned before, around my house it should fall real close to the eclipse's path.

I like the Tennessee State Parks, Solar Eclipse 'rate adjustment', for the campgrounds. Doubles the regular rate for two, of the three night stay. Usually the minimum stay is two nights, but during the eclipse, it's minimum of three.

Eclipse Rate 2017 - Camping Area 1 Campsite 2
Solar Eclipse Rate Adjustment:
Sunday Night - August, 20 2017
Through Tuesday, August 22, 2017
View Discounts
2 $24.00 $48.00
