If we are talking reviewing images on a cell phone, why not skip a step and review the images on the camera lcd screen? Thats what I do.

Apple sells a card reader that plugs into iPhone or iPad for about $30.

That reads credit cards, not SD chips. Interesting concept though. Maybe we see one on the market soon?

This raises a question I have. When you transfer an image from, say, a SD card to iPhone does the file get altered in any way whatsoever. Making an image smaller means throwing file bytes away, right?

File transfer does not change the file. However, I don't find my iPhone to be a very good solution for storage. It's a bit awkward. For small volumes, I WiFi JPEGs from my GH4 to the phone, as they are recorded, and they automatically upload to iCloud and appear on my Macs. But for large numbers of images, it can't work fast enough.

There's really no better solution than a cheap netbook or laptop of some sort... There are portable DVD burners around, but they're as notoriously unreliable as the media they use.

You're probably thinking of the Square readers. That's different.

Apple does have a dongle that includes an SDXC reader: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2AM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?afid=p238%7CsKSP8osAh-dc_mtid_1870765e38482_pcrid_52243316890_&cid=aos-us-kwgo-pla-btb--slid--product-MJYT2AM/A

Be sure you read ALL the reviews on that site... Some people have had problems, while others love it.

On a month long combined photographic trip to Africa and Dubai two years ago, I opted out of dragging along my laptop because of airline weight requirements, but was then faced with image storage needs for my raw files and my wife's video footage. I researched and found a portable self contained Hyperdrive Colorspace backup. It's battery operated and hand held too. I was able to download and even see each image from each days download. When I arrived home I transferred almost 4000 raw image files and my wife's video files to my desk top computer. Haven't found the occasion to use it since.

I have been looking for a small, portable, hand size device that one can use to transfer and store images, card to device in the field - and view images, not to process, but simply delete unwanted duplicates... It seems a simple concept, but the only things I've found are very expensive ($500 and up) or get very very poor reviews. Has anyone out there discovered something they use and recommend? Thanks

SD cards are actually cheap. You can view your images on the card with the camera and you can delete if you wish. Why would you need anything else? I have a small metal case that holds 4 CF cards and several SD cards.

I just purchased a "RavPower" unit and it will transfer from SD cards to a storage device such as a portable hard driver or thumb drive. Simple to use and inexpensive ($40.00) from B&H. It also will become a bridge, a router or it will charge cell phone etc. from it's internal battery. I bought it for an upcoming trip to Hawaii and it will allow me to only take my tablet and leave the laptop at home (backing up the SD cards). It uses the same cord as my cell phone and tablet to recharge so therefore no extra charging unit. Takes a little getting used to but works well and seems to be well built.

Buy an iPad. It can be the older models (they cost less) and it is plug and play with a camera with a USB out, direct (need the right apple cable). No fuss no bother, and you can look at them as full size jPegs. Later they can be transferred to you own computer, for example, right into Lightroom.

I thought he was refering to the Apple Camera Connection Kit. In the first version you got two connectors: one SD card the other USB. Later they started selling the two connectors separately.

That's the same issue I had when I looked into the same situation a few years ago. I ended up buying a10 inch Lenovo laptop for $138 which has a 500gb hardrive. It's been the perfect travel computer. I can even run Photoshop and Lightroom on it, fairly efficiently. I also carry a 1tb external hd as a backup drive.
